Thiago Alves (16-7 MMA, 9-4 UFC) does not want to fight at middleweight and is willing to do whatever it takes to stay at welterweight.

The fighter on Monday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that he's hired nutritionist Mike Dolce, a veteran of "The Ultimate Fighter 7," to assure the UFC that he never again misses weight in the 170-pound class.

Alves finds out today whether the promotion will grant his wish.

"I think (at) 185, the guys are way too big for me," Alves said.

Alves weighed in at 171.5 pounds for a co-headlining fight against Jon Fitch this past Saturday at UFC 117 – a half-pound more than the one-pound overage allowed for non-title fights. He was fined 20 percent of his purse by the California State Athletic Commission, which oversaw the event at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

Smart move.  At least he is finally realizing he has a problem making weight.  Hopefully we get to see a new and improved Thiago that isn't drained from weight cut and is more explosive because of less muscle mass.

Wow Mike keeps getting more publicity for his diet...

This kinda reminds me when celebrities hire "sober companions" to keep them away from drugs and alcohol.

Well at least it's a step in the right direction and it shows he knows there is a big problem.

Being that he was in the hunt for a title shot, I'm surprised he wasn't already consulting a nutritionist. I mean when your looking for every possible edge on the competition diet should be one of the first tools you look at. It's baffling sometimes how even some pro fighters have very little idea about nutrition, it could add so much to their game.

LOL @ Alves thinking the guys at 185 are too big for him. What the fuck does he think the guys at 170 think about him?

The sandbagging needs to stop. I still don't understand why they don't start doing same day weigh-in's. I am willing to bet the fights would be MUCH more interesting.

I also think that if Dana does give him the chance to fight at 170 again that it should be under the condition that if he ever comes in over again he will be fired.

What Alves does in my opinion is cheating.

Saying guys at your natural weight class are too big for you is a little bit weak imo.

This.

And whoever said there is only a 5lb difference between Alves and the guys he fights on fight day, that's just crazy. Alves weighs a lot more than just five pounds over his opponents and he doesn't need to be fighting at 170.

It's sandbagging is all it is. The fact is he doesn't want to fight people his same size because he must feel he won't find success there.

Gotta disagree Fitch looked liked the much bigger fighter as did GSP.

As a big fan of Alves, I'd like the UFC to introduce a 175lb weight division.

lol @ natural weight class.

you mean the guys that cut 25 pounds to make 185 are about the same size as the dude who cuts that much to make 170?

wow. great math. why do fucking idiots who have never competed at anything feel the need to chime in. shut the fuck up.
