Me and the family were thinking about taking a vacation one of these days to japan.

Mostly the reason is i really want to attend a DREAM event but hey why not make a family vacation out of it.

My main concern was knowing VERY little japanese, mostly just greetings and yes or no...

I was just wondering how feasable it was to get around and have fun without knowing the language.

Are there a decent amount of people that understand/speak language and would it be worth it hiring an interpreter?

Just come over. Not many english speakers here but millions of tourists made it before you without speaking japanese too right?

There are interpreters here but usually they are pretty expensive. At some tourist spots like Asakusa you can ask for a guide (free of charge). They are students or houswives who like to improve their english. Usually you pay them at least their drinks or a snack at a vendor near the tourists spots.

Every tourist information provides you with maps and "how-to" guides.

What are you plans and where you wanna go?

Mainly would be staying in Tokyo.

Would like to see the touristy things.

The fish market, akihabara, etc.

Like i said i'd really like to see a dream event.

To get tickets i heard you have to go to some convenient store and enter some code in a ticket dispenser.

I would probably use a train to get around to other parts of japan.

For Tokyo and the typical tourist places you won't have any major problems. Easiest would be just to go to the tourist information spots. When you arrive at Narita airport, you have one directly after you leave the gates. They help you with free maps and reservations.

You can find more information here:

Yes, you can buy the Tickets at a machine in some convenient store. Ask the tourist information girl to write you a little memo in japanese "I like to buy xx tickets for Dream event xxx" and show that to the people working in the shop. They will help you to buy it.

You can also get it from some pages on the internet like:
