Byrd - ive always wanted to gig for flounder. looks pretty damn fun.
When I first moved here and a buddy told me about it, I thought it didn't sound very sporting but then he took me and I was hooked. Now it is probably my favorite type of fishing. I go out about 2am on a still night and have the water to myself. With the lights in the shallows it's like having your own personal giant aquarium, usually see shrimp, crabs, stingray, mullet, eels, etc. So I have a great time even if I don't catch a thing...

50th Anniversary Zillion on a Zillion rod... very nice.

I have the same combo, but swapped the stock knobs to cork and upgraded the bearings and drag. It's probably my favorite combo to fish.

Man you probably have forgotten more about all things fishing than Ill ever know but I never use a reel straight out of the box.

Thats probably because I get an erection over stripping and regreasing my reels haha

Im a weirdo

I am scared to open my reels up. Is there a good place to learn how to do it? I look at the user manual and it just looks like way to many parts.

The cork knobs are more for looks than anything. I upgrade the bearings and drags in all my reels for added performance and durability. They fish fine out of the box, but I'm a bit of an enthusiast and just like tweaking my reels.

The zillions are built like a tank and probably one of the best workhorse reel ever made. While they're not the best Daiwa has to offer, the zillion line is my favorite reel to fish.

What brand of reels do you use? Spinning or baitcasting?

i service all of my reels. little scared the first few times with my trolling gear but it gets easier every time. my bass reels (curados) have upgraded drags, but i left the stock ones in until they needed to be changed.

for the grouper we use live amberstripe scads. a guy here caught a few world record groupers with scads. he has a few pics in saltwater sportsman magazine (Sept issue page 12) and (feb 2010 sportfishing magazine page 20)

Jewfish aka GOLIATH Grouper. Like hooking a dump truck as it goes whizzing by. Like catching a 500 pound smallmouth bass. "The reel is glowing red hot..."
