In a prefight interview with Joe Rogan, Frank Mir says that his Jiu Jitsu is too gi-oriented.  The discussion was at first about his weight.  Initially, Mir felt that he was just undersized in the heavyweight division.  Then upon working with different trainers, he came to the conclusion that his Jiu Jitsu was as he put it, "Lazy, too gi-oriented".

I caught that as well. Don't think he has done gi training in the past 5 years. He has an agenda as well. I've seen him do an interview over a year ago calling it archaic training. It was funny to see him on the cover of Black Belt magazine a few months back with him on the cover with a gi. His interviews prior to his fight with cro cop was more and more diarrhea of the mouth, just a lot of shit talking.

I don't think he's blaming the gi.  My best guess is that he feels that his Jiu Jitsu style is not aggressive in the sense of clinching right away and making something happen asap.  As opposed to being relaxed, trying to move your hips, while someone like Brock or Shane is smashing you down.

Well, his last strategy of letting Brock play bongoes on his head from a bad half guard wasn't the fault of either gi or no-gi training. It was just a bad strategy. As was trying to outmuscle Carwin.

Mir should have used rubber guard or the lockdown against Brock. He would have won with ease.

He's so worried about improving his wrestling that he doesn't spend any time improving his jiu jitsu. He's never going to out wrestle the monsters in the Hw division who have been wrestling their whole lives. Key to beating a big strong wrestler is to have better striking and better jiu jitsu.
