Are there any cheap and fun cars for 10K or less?

First gen Miata comes to mind but I'd like some ideas. Miata seem fun, 5spd, huge community, huge aftermarket support, easy to work on, etc.

Any ideas?

miata was the first that came to mind when i read the title. the masses may consider it a girl car but its like driving a go-cart... absolute blast, and you're right about the huge community, the miata forum is bigger than any other dedicated automotive board.

I have a AE86 corolla now and yes it's cheap to buy the car, and there is a community, and a good aftermarket, it's NOTHING compared to Miata. I like how easy it is to work on Asian econo cars but parts can be expensive and not that many choices. I used to think Miata was for gheys but it's really the smart man's car.

Any other ideas?

the older corollas are great as well but its damn near impossible finding one that hasn't been molested by some wannabe drifter. and in regards to walbjj's post, is front drive an option for you? i dont like hondas but those integra type r models are great little track rats

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to selling this car and getting into something else down the road. Most of the people not all but most of the people I've dealt with have been shady.

I have nothing against FWD. Civic sounds like a good idea because they are sooo reliable but how is it compared to the Miata? The potential is lower no? For the same money invested in a Civic compared to a Miata, the Miata will be faster right?

unless you do a swap or find a civic with decent power (late 90's early 2000's SI) id say a miata is a better choice. im not completely familiar with when they came out but the Mazdaspeed miata models are boosted right? older models had SC's and newer have turbos? early 90's MR2's seem to be fun cars from what ive heard as well.

i had a friend with an integra gsr with the type-r engine (b18c5 i think) THAT was a fun car to drive when he would let me. thanks to honda engines having relatively low torque, it handled great for a FWD no torque steer whatsoever and took corners like a champ.

If you want to do any track days other than SCCA parking lot races, RWD is a must. I see metric shit tons of Miatas out there, with lots of S2000s and Z3s lately. I imagine the Miatas are the cheapest way to go though, seeing as how they've been around so long and have such a developed aftermarket.

I would love a corvette but Miata seems like the answer over and over.

The thing about civic is the people who come with the package. Not all but the majority are a bunch of thug kids.

240sx is a good and cheap platform but every kid now has one with a SR20det in it.

Sadly, the ae86 is one of the few toyota rear drive cars....that don't weigh a ton like the lexus cars or a supra.

I've been looking at some suzuki swift GTI or maybe a nissan nx2000 but they're getting hard to find.

This guy has a very fast nx2000....

I can say a Miata beats most all cars in a lot of different aspects. E36 330 or M3 at that price will need extensive work just to get it back to good condition.
Hypothetically, if I had 10k for a car that will be ready to be drive, safe, reliable, and fun most of those cars would blow past my budget.

Sounds like I've made up my mind, unless what I'm saying is simply untrue. What say you?

What are you going to do with it? Just drive it around town or is this something for the track, too?

I think with a Miata you'll definitely get a fun car. BUT in order to get serious power to it you'd have to switch out the motor. Don't get me wrong a small in-line four is cool and fun, especially with a super light car. The way I look at it is: if you're going to have to spend serious money to get more out of it, like it's sounding like you will, you'd have to spend less on any of the cars I listed. Out of the cars I listed the funnest would probly be a E36 M3. Not only that, but it's a nice looking car too, and you can actually fit 4 people in case you wanna cruise around.

M3:

Starting to see some '03/4 Mach 1's for about 10k.

WAY underrated car! Bone stone except for a set of skinny 245/45-17 Nitto 555 drag radials, my old one ran 12.99.

Same brakes as the Cobra, but 500# lighter. Came with Tokico's from the factory, too.

I also owned a Mach 1 and it was a very fast car for stock. Typically, back then, Ford's Mustangs were disappointing power wise from factory, but this isn't the case with the Mach 1.

For 10k you can get an Infiniti M30 (nissan leopard), install a rb26dett, and have what is basically a legal R31 skyline.
