...Where was the research that showed the effectiveness of back surgery before they started to prescribe surgery as a treatment to the public? It seems like they went on the "cut first, see if it works later" model. Not only does this new research show that back surgery didn't work for a vast majority of people, but the back surgery made people worse!

-------------

Back surgery may backfire on patients in pain
An estimated 600,000 Americans have back surgery every year. But new research shows that patients who've had spinal fusion more need pain medication and are less likely to return to work than those with similar conditions who didn't have an operation.

surgeries in general CAN work, but proper diagnosis is always needed. And most doctors are too lazy to investigate other treatments and just go to the slice and dice method. Problem is, even if it somewhat fixes the problem you still never go back to being fully healthy!

Given this research, what do you think the medical establishment is going to do:

A) Quickly gather data from other hospitals and see if the same results appear on an ever more massive scale.

B) Immediately stop doing back surgeries and find a solution that does not make a majority of people worse.

C) Ignore the research and continue exactly what they have been doing.

I vote for C.

lol, my mom is a nurse. I can tell you its going to be C. You will always have doctors taht look for alternative methods other than surgeries, but they are a definite minority.

Here's a very interesting and informative article:

Lies, Damned Lies, and Medical Science

Much of what medical researchers conclude in their studies is misleading, exaggerated, or flat-out wrong. So why are doctors--to a striking extent--still drawing upon misinformation in their everyday practice? Dr. John Ioannidis has spent his career challenging his peers by exposing their bad science.
