Recent news of a merger between the UFC and WEC, which will combine the lightweight division of both promotions, has had no effect on Josh 'The Punk' Thomson's interest in jumping organizations.

Thomson says the only names he'd like to fight in the UFC are Frankie Edgar and B.J. Penn and that "They made it sound so great that a company went under. The simple fact of the matter was that the WEC failed and they put it with the UFC to carry it.

"To compare WEC lightweights to Strikeforce and the UFC is not fair because if they were that good, they would have been fighting for the UFC. I think the world of Varner, but I beat Hermes and Hermes beat Varner. Varner was the WEC champ for awhile. So, where does that leave us?"

Although he's hoping for Kawajiri, Thomson says he's open to any fighter Strikeforce puts in front of him. But should he run into problems against an opponent he expects to dominate, as was the case when he fought Pat Healy in a close fight in June, Thomson admits he likely would put a lot of thought into life outside the cage.

"If I fought Kawajiri and lost, it wouldn't distract me," Thomson said. "But if I lost to somebody that I wasn't supposed to lose to, then I would start to wonder. To be honest, I had that feeling with the Pat Healy fight.

"Basically, that would have been one of those fights where if I had lost, I would have thought, 'Is this really for me anymore?'"

So the WEC LWs suck because Thomson beat a guy 6 years ago who beat Varner 4 years ago, and Varner was the WEC LW champ 1 year ago?

Logic, no can defend.

I thought Hermes beat Thomson when it happened. I will have to rewatch the fight.

lol at that crap. This is more about the 145lbs and 135lbs fighters anyway. And there are a lot of great fighters at both those weight classes. And WEC put on better fights then both UFC and strikeforce combined.

I'd also like to point out that Strikeforce's LW division has absolutely zero depth. If you were to make a Strikeforce LW top 10 you'd have to round it out with guys like Jorge Gurgel and Conor Huen.

Basically that's about as right as saying a couple years back, well Rampage beat Chuck 2x and Wand murdered Rampage 2x so Wand will definetly murder Chuck.  While that was an awesome fight and neither dominated, its just another example that MMATH is not applicable anytime, anywhere when discussing anything regarding MMA. Just my $.02

Josh is normally very humble but he is wrong here. This is definitely about the 135, 145 and soon 125ers. As for the 155 guys, Cowboy and Ben Henderson might have some success but only time and fights will tell. Phone Post

ya..Josh seems to run his mouth a ton.

I wouldn't use the word humble to describe him.

So much for shedding the "Punk" nickname. I guess Josh got his brain scrambled a little more than we thought when Yves enzuigiri'd his head off his shoulders. I would be willing to bet there are at least a couple of WEC 155'ers that would shut Josh's mouth...

Ben Henderson at least could compete with any LW in the world.

Thompson is a joke.  I love how he leaves out that he was a UFC failure.  Also love how he beats a guy who beat a former WEC champ and somehow that makes him better then all the WEC guys.

I cant wat for Fancy Pants to choke the piss out of this d bag.

I agree. Josh is a tough fighter but I'd pick either one of those guys over him. I can understand being proud of the organization that you work for but his dismissive comments about the LW talent in the WEC are over the top.

Except the merger was more about adding new weight classes in 135 and 45 than 155.

Thomson hasn't impressed me in awhile anyway. I used to think he was a top 5 fighter, but he has recently not seemed as good as he once was. JZ is not top 5 anymore, and he lost that fight IMO.

Josh also lost to Clay Guida in 2006. Does that mean Huerta, Florian, Diego Sanchez, or Tyson Griffin who all beat Clay, can beat him? Of course, according to Josh.
