I used to have it bad. I take 20mg of Lexapro everyday. It has helped tremendously with the social anxiety and depression. However, it can make you feel like a zombie, which I'm sure you've heard.

I don't know if you still come here, but if you do, I hope it gets better for you!

My anxiety is still fucking my life up. Whenever I walk into a room I feel like it's all eyes on me, and that everyone is judging the way I look, the way I walk, and even the way I position my hands. I'm weighing up whether or not to drop out of college due to persistent migraines caused by anxiety attacks and sloping grades. It's funny, I used to have lots of mates when I was younger, I was pretty outgoing too, but now the only person close to me is my shadow. I like solitude, but I'm going stir crazy at the moment. Dad-gone, girlfreind-gone, mum-ill, freinds-moved on. I think I'm going to down a bottle of whiskey and cry myself while watching re runs of animal house..

I've been down that alley, except with high school. Were you put down a lot, or taunted when you were younger? I realized my social anxiety had stemmed from my brother. He loves me to death, but growing up, I NEVER felt as good as anybody else, and he made sure to tell me. He was relentless with putting me down. It's not that way anymore, and I don't think he realized what he was doing.

I hate to be the prescription guy, but TRY lexapro. Talk to your doctor about it, I didn't want to try anti-depressants, but you HAVE to weigh the options. Will the side effects cause as much harm as what your anxiety is costing you at the moment?

Please, I REALLY want to you to get help. Less than one year ago I was in your EXACT same position! You're not the only one who suffers from this, but you clearly want help, and you realize how much this is costing you.

If there is anyway you would like to keep in touch, I am all for it. I would love to see you get better.

Consider it, please.

Sorry for that unorganized post, I was just pretty emotional writing that. Feeling like nobody else is like you, and you're just so alone, it fucking sucks. They were the worst years of my life. It can get better. If you were like me, you feel like it can't get better, and that's just who you are; but it's not. Remember that.

Thanks mate, I really appreciate it. I'm seeing the doctor in a couple of weeks, he doesn't know about the anxiety but I feel that it's a good time to tell him now. I know it will get better, it's just a matter of when.

No, but Xanax is a powerful drug. I know people who have been addicted to it, I believe the UG's own Ian Mcall once was. Is it worth getting it prescribed? Does it make a difference? I'm going back to college next month and I'm freaking the fuck out.

I suffer from social anxiety, stay away from any benzodiazepines, they make you feel like a zombie, and gave me horrible depression. I was on clonzaepam for 6 years, I'm withdrawing now and it's brutal.

Now that I'm off it I feel waaaaay less depressed.

Anyways, my best advice to try and help battle SA is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), it helps fix a lot of distorted thoughts that ruminate in your head which ultimately leads to making you feel anxious.

My other advice would be to hopefully find a support group, it's been helpful for me.

Also if you can try and get the newest version of the Social Phobia workbook, it would be helpful for you to the disorder and how you can conquer it.

Sorry for all the info, if you need further info I can try and help, i'm still battling it but I have gotten better.

Migraines, as I'm sure you know often can be caused by anxiety. Constant worrying and anxiety and negative thinking can actually lower your seratonin levels and help you feel like shit even more.

A lot of people "self medicate" anxiety with alcohol. Oddly, alcohol as it wears off will increase anxiety, also alcohol causes migraines....

Benzo's (drugs like xanax) can help for a month or two in low doses taken during emergencies, or times when you cannot cope. Probably for times like how you are feeling now. Otherwise I'd stay away from it.

Other than "talk therapy", which is as effective as any medication, I think you would feel a lot better taking lexapro, celexa, or some sort of SSRI medication. They are called "anti-depressants" but you may consider them anti-anxiety meds also. This is a safer and longer term "fix" than something like xanex but take about 3 weeks to really work.

Good luck with the doc and you can ask him about St Johns Wort if you want to go herbal, do some talk therapy, get on an SSRI, get some exercise, and try to get sleep, avoid the alcohol or other migraine triggers.

Other migraine triggers - onions, aspartame (diet soda), alcohol, keep hydrated, etc. Read here http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/migraine-headache/DS00120/DSECTION=causes

Last thought for the night: anyone takine SSRI like zoloft and isn't satisfied or don't like side effects, or anyone talking to dr about an SSRI like lexapro, prozac, celexa, etc should ask about Wellbutrin.

Wellbutrin is a great anti-depressant, not an SSRI, and very low on side effects. Some people take it to help quit smoking. What works for one person may not for another so consider asking about Wellbutrin.

I beg to differ.

I rather drink to take a benzo, just calms me down.

You mean you would rather drink than take a benzo?

I mean, sure when you are drunk you may be calm...but you can't be drunk all the time. When alcohol wears off it causes anxiety (next day). Not to mention, alcohol is a huge trigger for migraines. Alcohol cannot cure anxiety but it can make it worse for sure.

Guys I'm sure you all know this but just a reminder that alcohol is a depressant. Be careful with self medication, it starts out alright but can downward spiral very quickly.
If you haven't talked about your depression symptoms with your doctor please do so.

I'm sure you guys know this but it doesn't hurt to hear it now and again.
For years I thought I just liked to party. I didn't realize I was self medicating until I went for help.
