Japanese featherweight star Michihiro Omigawa has signed with the UFC and will debut against Chad Mendes in either February or March, Versus.com has learned from sources.

Omigawa, 12-8-1, has won his last five fights in a row and is 8-2-1 since dropping down to featherweight.

The 34-year-old Japanese fighter is universally considered one of the 10 best featherweights in the world. He has defeated the likes of Hatsu Hioki, Cole Escovedo, Marlon Sandro and Nam Phan.

It has been rumored for several months that he was in contract negotiations with Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC.

Mendes, 9-0, most recently defeated Javier Vazquez at WEC 52 via unanimous decision. The Team Alpha Male member debuted in WEC in March and has won his first four fights in WEC. This will mark his first fight in the UFC.

It is still unknown whether the fight will take place at UFC 126 in February or 128 in March.

Omigawa did not do well in the UFC originally. This could be due to him ust not being seasoned yet or because he was undersized.

I think Mendes is as bad of a matchup for Omigawa as you can get. That doesn't mean Mendes will win, but he certainly has the style to take it.

Interesting fight

Damn, now that's a legit signing. Top ten FW in the world, instantly adds more depth to the division. That's a tough first fight but it's gonna be sink or swim. I hope the UFC aggressively goes after some of the other top featherweights too Phone Post

I like the signing but wish they'd give top Japanese talent some easier first fights in the UFC to get their footing.

Well.. he's been in the UFC before, and dude has beaten Cole Escovedo, Micah Miller, Takaya, Hioki, Marlon Sandro, Nam Phan, and LC davis in the past 2 years or so.. Those are some legit ass wins. I'd say this is a good tough first fight for him that he could definitely win.

I look forward to seeing him in the UFC, but don't forget he had a couple of gift decisions in the last two years also.

WOW! Awesome news. Just wish the UFC would start a "UFC Japan"...as their fighters seem to take a beating when they travel over here.
