Brazilian magazine TATAME is reporting that Strikeforce has plans to host an 8-man Heavyweight GP in 2011.

The report states that Fedor Emelianenko will face Antonio Silva in a yet-to-be-announced Strikeforce February event as part of the semi-quarters, along with Fabricio Werdum, coming off his historic victory over Fedor, versus Sergei Kharitonov in a March event. The other two possible fights for the tournament could involve current Strikeforce HW Champion Alistair Overeem against former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski, and recent Strikeforce acquisition Josh Barnett could face Strikeforce HW prospect Brett Rogers to round out the tournament.

The tournament could be broken into three events, where the semis and/or finals are potential candidates to spearhead the first Strikeforce pay-per-view event since signing a deal with Showtime/CBS after purchasing the Pro Elite assets back in 2009. MMAPayout has also learned although all the details are not confirmed as of this time, it is Strikeforce’s intent to run the HW GP and have contacted several HW’s in their roster to prepare in case injuries or other rumored participants cannot compete.

They won't get this to work.

Keep it simple, have the Fedor-BigFoot winner fight the Werdum-Overeem winner.

This would be very interesting and could gain a lot of interest from MMA fans.

I would think that the 4 winners of the quarters or 2 winners of the semis would move up favorably on the HW Rankings. IF that happened now, say Fedor beat Silva, Werdum beat Kharitonov, Overeem beat Arlovski, Barnett beat Brett Rogers, I think you could sort the rankings like this:

1. Cain Velasqquez
2. Fabricio Werdum
3. Fedor Emelianenko
4. Junior Dos Santos
5. Brock Lesnar
6. Alistair Overeem
7. Josh Barnett
8. Shane Carwin
9. Frank Mir
10. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

Then, if Fedor beat Werdum and Overeem beat Barnett:

1. Cain Velasquez
2. Fedor Emelianenko
3. Alistair Overeem
4. Junior Dos Santos
5. Brock Lesnar
6. Fabricio Werdum
7. Josh Barnett
8. Shane Carwin
9. Frank Mir
10. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

Then, if Overeem wins the Strikeforce HW GP, it'd be:

1. Alistair Overeem
2. Cain Velasquez
3. Fedor Emelianenko
4. Junior Dos Santos
5. Brock Lesnar
6. Fabricio Werdum
7. Josh Barnett
8. Shane Carwin
9. Frank Mir
10. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

Arecsa - Can't wait for this tournament to last 3 years as Fedor re-negotiates his way through it.

Came here to say this. It'll never happen.

And LOL @ the idea that they would have their own champ fighting in a tournament.

Love the fact that they signed Kharitonov, just hope he shows up in shape this time! If he does, he is the dark horse.

Strikeforce can't even control their own fighters so I don't see how they can plan anything.

MMA rankings are such a joke, there is no way Werdum is #2. He would get destroyed by half the guys on that list. MMA is damn near impossible to rank accurately so I do not know why people even try in the first place or care about any published ranking in the first place. It is all nonsense.

Debating who is the best guy I get entirely. Or even top 3 guys, but once you start attempting to make a top 10 list it becomes pointless in my opinion.

Strikeforce will hold the first official Catchweight Tournament in 2011. With the recent announcement of the HW tournament and the Middleweight Tournament of 2010 that never happened SF has decided to just do what it does best, mismatch because none of the right guys will sign to fight!

Imagine the possibilities...

Alistair vs Lindland
Brett Rogers vs Semtex
Fedor vs TBA (Fedor may fight winner of Tournament in 2015)
Werdum vs Injuries
Mike Kyle vs Andre the Giant

Winner takes home the SF Title and a UFC Contract!

THOUGHTS???

Your rankings assume that the UFC fighters do nothing and simply remain ranked at or around where they currently are as Strike Force fighters begin to move up the ranks and push the idle UFC fighters down.  Barnett debuting at #7 by beating Rogers who is on a 2 fight KO losing streak is laughable at best.  Shouldn't he have to beat a top 10 ranked fighter to enter the top10, let alone the top 7???
