My dad and his buddies take off for 10 days to South Dakota each year.

My dad takes his custom AR15 and 22-250. He basically uses the AR for anything 200 yards or less, and the 22=250 out to 500. They shoot some awesome videos while out there. A couple of the guys have 17 cals they mess around with. Each guy usually shoots a couple hundred dogs. The landowners love them guys from Indiana.

Im hoping to go this year.

They all have custom shooting benches - modified old shool desks, adjustable table, seat, legs, gun vise, etc... pretty wild what they came up with. Removable umbrellas. Big cooler full of beer and empty cans piled at their feet.

sounds so fun!

I wish I could figure out a way to go

what is it about the Prarie Dogs that land owners hate?

I saw a program on National Geographic that made them look so "cute"

cattle/horses 'supposedly' can break their legs in the gopher holes.. whether or not that is true, who knows.

Because they dig holes and tunnels and ruin their pastures, cows step in the holes and break their legs.

Prairie dog towns and Gopher holes aren't even in the same catagory. They are huge big enough for me to stick my whole leg into one of the holes. I live in South Dakota and we have 6 square miles of prairie dog town. The 22 hornet is fine if you are here right away in the spring, the dogs get smart and start ducking you if you get to close later in the year. We use 223's and 22-250's.

"Prairie dog towns and Gopher holes aren't even in the same catagory."

Gopher = Prairie Dog where I'm from.. I always thought it was more of a 'slang' term more so than an actual species.

Anyways, there isn't much more fun a person can have shooting than planting yourself next to a prairie dog town with a center-fire .22

How would the .17 HMR be for this type of varmit hunting? Would they have similar range to the 22-250?

Grand Master Lou Ellison once shot 1472 in one weekend out at 4 corners. He used 3 rifles at short medium and long range. 22 hornet, 223 Remington and a 22-250 Remington. He shot the close ones first and worked out all day long. He started with 500 rounds for each rifle.
