Cesar Gracie recently joined the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, and had this to say about Greg Jackson:

"He's more of a coordinator where he puts things in perspective. And he's great at what he does. Training's at this time, let's go run the mountain or something. Let's go train with this guy. He's more of a motivational speaker possibly, but as a true sense of the word 'coach,' he's not on the same page as great coaches of the world. He's not. I've got nothing against Greg Jackson in particular. There's a lot of guys like that. I'm sure he's a great guy and everything. But the guys from [American Top Team] in Florida, it's like, you don't have Dan Lambert doing that. He doesn't get in the limelight and he's great, he does everything. He sets it all up, and he's done an incredible job. You never see him pretending he did something he didn't do. The great coaches are in the background."

He has a great point, but it could have been made without throwing some one under the bus. Don't highlight yourself or friends by highlighting others weaknesses. It just make you look childish. Phone Post

Sounds like sour grapes. Gracies camp doesn't get near the recognition that Greg Jacksons camp does. Obviously both are world class but this just comes off as petty. Phone Post

Finally, someone fucking said it. What was that bullshit system Jackson came up with that he doesn't talk about anymore? Gaidujitsu? He's lucky Diego did what he did or he'd still be a nobody. Phone Post

Not sure how accurate that is....I mean if Jackson is putting together the training regimen, and strategy to beat the opponent, he's pretty much the coach. Its not like he has to be teaching how to throw a head kick, or arm bar to be considered the "coach" imo.

Greg holds pads every day.  Go to Jacksons any day before 1pm and you'll see him holding pads working with guys before the daily public classes start.  CG is clearly bitter.
I think Caesar means Trainer, ie the guy who trains all of these guys. Jackson didn't teach Rashad how to wrestle, he didn't teach all of the guys that fight out of his camp, but he is definately the coach. Football coaches don't teach the Pros how to throw the ball but they do run the team.

If it is sour grapes, it could be how the translation works. CG sees the word coach and thinks of himself, the guy that trained all of these champs. Jackson is a coach in the sense that he is the co-ordinator of the training.

just my thoughts on the matter.

Weird that some of the absolute fighter's on the planet trust Greg to be their coach. He is without a doubt one of the best in the sport.

pfffft....why can't the gracies just accept that the sport has evolved beyond their dojo storming and rio beach fights?

we all owe the gracie family a debt of gratitude for elevating martial arts beyond katas and point fighting, but what contributions has caesar made? seems like he enjoys pissing in other people's woods to keep himself relevant.

No, some random scholastic wrestling coach likely taught Rashad how to wrestle MANY years before he even heard of MMA just like the same goes for Jake and Gil.  CG sure didn't teach them how to wrestle, and he obviously never bother teaching Nick or Nate how to wrestle either.

Rashad also wasn't winning by Head Kick KOs before he left Severn and moved his camp to Albuquerque.  To say or even imply Jackson isn't a good coach is just laughable, just like saying CG or Conan/Ricardo @ ATT aren't good coaches is laughable.

You don't have to justify Jackson dude, I was just pointing out where I thought CG was coming from. You also don't need to take a swipe at CG's camp because you think he insulted your coach or favorite camp.

The funny thing is, if Cesar had asked Jackson personally, he would have told him the exact same thing. I've heard hundreds of interviews with Jackson where he specifically mentions that he's just putting all of the pieces into the puzzle, but the day to day trainers are the ones giving the "hands on" training.

it's more of a snowball effect with some fighters, they see a guy's camp with winners in it and everyone wants in on the secret, it's very cyclical though I think, look at MFS Elite back in the day, EVERYONE wanted to train with Pat, is he any less of a trainer now? no, but when a camp doesn't have a title holder, or well know guys, in it, then it's not "in" to train there, not taking anything away from Jackson, but he has a TON of talented guys there, chicken or egg imo...

Thank you Cesar. I've been saying this about Greg for years. He just tells his fighter to do some pushups or run up a hill or put a weird choking device around your neck. He's just a geek with a gym.

I think this is spot on and very well stated.
