One of the greatest names of the Brazilian Wrestling, Rodrigo Artilheiro was chosen by Vitor Belfort to train his takedowns in Las Vegas, on the United States, and talked to TATAME about the preparation of the “Phenomenon” for his fight against Anderson Silva, on UFC 126.

Eduardo Ferreira: We did an article on the magazine and, among the 15 experts we’ve talked to, all of them have pointed out Anderson as the favorite. Do you, that has been training with him, think he has any chances against Anderson?

Rodrigo Artilheiro: Man, i don’t like to bet, even living in Las Vegas, but I’d bet all my cards on Vitor. I’ve said that already: in my mind, of a guy who once trained on the Nogueira’s TC, where Anderson trains… I know that he (Anderson) is an excellent athlete, a phenomenal guy, but I’ve always said that the only two guys that could beat Anderson are Vitor Belfort and Paulo Filho, if he’s on a good state of mind and well trained ... Vitor has all weapons to win this bout. We can’t predict the future, but I believe he’s better than Anderson in all aspects.

EF: People has criticized a lot he choosing you as his Wrestling coach, once he’s living on the United States, a place with great wrestlers. How do you see it, since you’ve confronted many international fighters, has trained in Bulgaria and has a large experience as a coach?

RA: Brazilians are the best fighters on the world, we are more talented, and we’re pretty good. If you look at UFC’s champions, you’ll see that most of them are Brazilians and that’s a pity Brazilian people see it that way. Werdum went fighting with Fedor and the Brazilians said Fedor would win. I’ve never seen such thing, it’s crazy.

I fight Judo since I’m 5, I have a genetic baggage, since my father was a Judo fighter, he was on the Brazilian team, so I conquered many Judo titles. I’m a black belt, I’ve beaten great heavy weight in Brazil... From Judo I started training Wrestling, spent five months in Bulgaria, one of the great places of the modality… I’ve beaten Bulgarians, Turkeys; I’ve earned a Olympic vacancy for Beijing ... I’ve fought with Cubans, many guys… Sometimes the guys don’t really know what they’re saying.

Here, I’ve trained with high level athletes of the American wrestling, like Randy Couture, I’ve had great trainings with them and they all love my training. It’s funny because the Americans come here and ask for help and the Brazilians claim the Americans are the bests (laughs). That’s all I have to say about it.

I’m sad Brazilian people think that way. They should be happy to see a Brazilian fighting on a modality that, indeed, I agree it’s weird, but there are great talents. If you look at the Brazilian team, you can find guys really tough, and I’m sure they could beat any guys. I, thanks God, am here helping not only Vitor, but few Americans. It’s a shame that Brazilians think that way.

I like Vitor and I think he has the tools to do this. But that coach is wrong, there is one thing Silva is WAY better at than Vitor. Consistency.

Damn11ers - Anderson is better at kick boxing, but Vitor is faster and WAY better at boxing. On the ground I give it a tie. It's gonna be an amazing fight. It's too bad that Anderson's reign is coming to an end though. I'm gonna miss his title run just like I miss BJ's. Oh well.

I would disagree that it is a tie on the ground. Anderson has far more submission wins than Vitor and I think he is just plain more dangerous, off of his back especialy.

I disagree, IMO Vitor is a much better wrestler, stronger and at least as technically sound with his subs and sub defence.

Silva's excellent MT clinch (which includes good TDD from that position) is his most important weapon in this fight. Aside from his mental fortitude that is.

I agree wholeheartedly that Vitor is a better wrsetler but I think Silva is more dangerous on the ground. I feel that if Vitor takes him down he is not very likely to sub him and I feel(especially with those long legs) that Silva very well could.

I think Silva's angles will be something for Vitor to worry about but I'm not sure Silva wants to draw him in close enough for his clinch.

Either way I think this fight will show if Silva has lost a step or not.

Psychology is very important in MMA, obviously, who has demonstrated the same confidence in every fight of his career? The same consistent fight mentality every time?

Vitor? lol

BJJ is very important in MMA, obviously, who has demonstrated the most effective submission game, with the most subs, and with subs against other black belts?

Vitor? lol

Ring rust is very important in MMA, obviously, who has not fought in a year and 4 months???

People say Anderson has never beat an elite striker? But what elite striker has Vitor beat?

lol

Vitor is on a 5-fight win streak, the longest of his entire career. Opponents: Franklin, Matt Lindland, Terry Martin, James Zikic, Ivan Serati.

Anderson has won 13 fights in a row, and that last loss was a DQ to Okami back in January 2006. Every opponent was a UFC contender except for Fryklund.

Anderson is 35, Vitor is 33.

What are people comparing? Anderson by TKO. This fight won't be as competitive as people think.

I am a huge fan of both fighters. But I think Anderson is going to break Vitor mentally. Anderson is just as fast as Belfort with his punches, kicks, knees, ect. I wont be surprised if Vitor tries to wrestle Anderson. Especially after seeing the Couture interview saying they are trying to get Vitor to mix his strikes with wrestling.

this fight should be incredible. i'm really hoping for a standup war/chess match.

Both guys are really fast. I think vitor has the faster hands by a bit but anderson has that agilty and movement that is second to none.

this is where i see their strenghs:

Vitor: Faster/more powerful hands, more agressive, won't showboat and take a risk of being caught. better pure boxing

Anderson: Faster kicks, more agility and faster body movement in general, footwork, versatility, unorthodox, arguably the better chin, bigger heart, stays cool as fuck under pressure and in danger, height, reach.

I'd say its a hard to call on the ground because neiher guy ever really tries to take it there often. You would have to give it to silva though based on the bigger submission wins over good grapplers.

i think the biggest question for me surrounding this fight though is that you never know watch standup style anderson is going to impose.

I think if he doesnt try and showboat whatsoever and just goes out there and tries to pick vitor apart with the cold, calculated, precision striking he made his name on then vitor doesnt stand a chance and neither do many people in mma in general. standing that is.

But if he drops his hands and showboats and trys to look for a highlight reel with vitor then this fight could be really interesting.

Consistent meaning that he Wins. Belfort is 19-8. This guys best days are far behind him. Silva will toy with him.

Quick5pnt0 - Personally I think Belfort has a good chance at scoring a quick knock out but the longer it goes the more likely Anderson will get in a groove and start picking Vitor apart. Also if it goes into the later rounds Belfort will most likely have a problem because he hasn't gone past three rounds since '06 and is coming off a long layoff. <img src="/images/phone/post_tag.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>

Vitor has never gone past 3 rounds...

MrHenson -  shit

believe that if you want

Anderson let all that shit happen, he was going to finish by sub, period.

there's no way anyone really believes that. anderson himself said he won only because of divine intervention.
