Do you think that was an informative commentary or analysis ?
I thought it was lazy and the same recycled criticisms that frustrate Nietzsche scholars.
There is a good book titled "What Nietzsche Really Said"
and many lecture available too help you understand and draw some better conclusions about Nietzche and his work.
Nietzche would (and did) say his philosophy was a joyous one that embraces life.
I think he is an easy target for hack writers to take pot shots. You could write an article about any number of deranged people-killers and put some of the blame on what book they were reading and identifying with lately. That article was about as insightful as some one telling me that religion is the cause of some violence.

well, other than the article actually attempts to take blame away from nietzche and e.g. points out loughner completely misunderstood his writings, and goes on to point out that nietzche embraces life e.g.

"Nietzsche, oddly, has suffered a similar fate. Because of his assault on religion and rationalist metaphysics, and because of the hints of anarchy in his assorted visions of the future (e.g., "the transvaluation of all values"), he's taken as the West's über-nihilist. But he saw himself as the scourge of European nihilism, and possibly also its remedy. Nietzsche saw nihilism as a disease"

great post!

I thought the article was alright.

The author wasn't blaming Nietzsche for Loughner.

He was just stating why deranged and unstable people such as Loughner could find Nietzsche attractive.

I agree.

BTW what is your opinion on the definition of nihilism given in that article?

"Nietzsche saw nihilism as a disease, which grows from, in Alexander Nehamas' words, "the assumption that if some single standard is not good for everyone and all time, then no standard is good for anyone at any time." "

Is it sufficient? How would you characterize nihilism?

Still if the authors point was that nut bags find Nietzche attractive and then gift wrapped the article with some language about what Nietzche was really about, it's been done before and I the author probably got a thrill about pointing out his original point about attracting nut bags.
To point out that unstable types latch on to philosophies is like telling me the sky is blue You could write the sane article about Marx or Jesus, Muhamed etc.
