Donald Cerrone, the 10-time WEC veteran, had an outstanding performance in his UFC debut Saturday night, submitting Paul Kelly in the second round of their fight at UFC 126.

Cerrone's work on the ground to transition toward that submission was outstanding: He achieved full mount, then forced Kelly to buck up to get him off, then took Kelly's back, locked in a body triangle, and used punches from the bottom to soften Kelly up and eventually get his forearm under Kelly's neck.

The new Japanese stars are finding it tough tonight in the UFC. Michihiro Omigawa dropped his left hand through and was pounded repeatedly by Chad Mendes' overhand rights. Mendes controlled the fight on the feet and the ground to roll to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all three card, in the first Spike fight at UFC 126.

Mendes, fighting out of Urijah Faber's Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, showed big improvement on his feet and with his stamina. A former two-time NCAA wrestling all-american Cal Poly and the NCAA tournament runner-up at 141 pounds in 2008, Mendes sent the message early that he was willing to duke it out with Omigawa. Once he softened up Omigawa on the feet, the fight was simplified.

Mendes via unanimous decision. Hope Omigawa catches him with a sub though. Not a fan of modern day "Lay n' Pray."

Haven't been a big fan of Mendes's style as of yet. I know's he's a great athlete so hopefully he can start doing a bit more then just holding guys down.

BushidoAristotle - Omigawa gets a "F" in striking.

I think he's keeping his hands lower to defend the takedown. He knocked out Nam Phan last year standing up, so his striking has been effective.

I'd actually give that round to Omigawa. Mendes did absolutely nothing with the one takedown he got. Omigawa actually worked for a submission.

Omigawa has that bushido spirit, and may be able to pull this off now that Mendes has gassed

Hmm. Looks like Omigawa won't be #4 on the USA TODAY/SB Nation Consensus Rankings anymore.

30-27 Mendes.

Terrible tactical decision by Omigawa to go for that sacrifice guillotine in the last round. However, they should have stood the fight up, Mendes wasnt really doing anything but he got another td and that was it.

Omigawa at least went for it but his plodding style is too...plodding. He had the opportunity to take over imo late in R2 and R3 but he's too slow.

Not really impressed with Mendes still though this was an improvement over Javi. LMAO at Goldberg saying that was a "tremendous" performance or whatever, it was literally a defining blanket routine.
