Gilbert "El Nino" Melendez, has signed a new, multi-year agreement with Strikeforce.

"STRIKEFORCE is my home, they've always been like family to me and I'm looking forward to continuing my career with them," said the talented, exciting, 5-foot-9, 27-year-old protégé of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master Cesar Gracie and Muay Thai legend Jongsanan Fairtex.  "There are a lot of great fights out there for me – lots of challenges. I can't wait to get back into the cage, do my thing and show the world that I'm still at the top of my game.''

Universally recognized as one of the top 155-pounders in the world, Melendez has won four in a row and five of six.

Melendez of San Francisco, by way of Santa Ana, Calif., last fought on April 17, 2010, retaining the STRIKEFORCE belt with a dominant, lopsided five-round decision over Japanese superstar Shinya Aoki in Nashville, Tenn., live on The CBS Television Network.

"I'm healthy again and excited about fighting again real soon,'' the personable, charismatic Melendez said. "It doesn't matter who I fight. I just want to get back in there and rip.''

I hate to see another top fighter locked out of competing with the best but Strikeforce has been good to Cesar gracie camp. There should be some loyalty there. Strikeforce just needs to make these guys fight more and give them better matchups. The best thing would be for them to lock up the Kawajiri fight for Melendez before spring. Build a name with Alvarez and have them fight in the summer or fall.

As of now Bellator is on the ball with signing some top free agents. I think the majority guys in there 170lb tourney would give Nick Diaz a run for his money.

Just a personal note, Gil is staying Strikeforce becuase it looks to be the best place for him. Nick is staying in Strikeforce becuase he is scared.

He's already beaten Thomson, Aoki, and Kawjiri. The Alvarez fight may well never happen. Other than JZ, what interesting fights are there for Gil over there? Oh yeah, "Fancy Pants".

He said he feels he is the best in the world, if thats the case he knows where he needs to be to prove it. Cearly he isn't overly excited to fight UFC level guys. Lets be realistic, you can't deny that the UFC offers more high quality opponents in every division but HW than any other fighting organization.

Ever stop and think that gilbert had a championship clause in his previous contract? Maybe that has something to do with Strikeforce champions getting contract extensions. i don't know if thats the case, but i wouldn't be surprised.

I have no problem with Melendez sticking with SF, especially if he's getting paid well. What's stupid is these guys saying, "I want to fight the UFC guys" and then still sticking with SF. If you want to fight the UFC guys, then sign with UFC. That's what makes guys like Melendez and Diaz look bad. If they never mentioned UFC or wanting to fight UFC fighters and re-signed with SF, there wouldn't be this outrage.

I can understand that this move is in his financial interests, but it pretty much sucks from a fan's perspective. Edgar and Maynard are the big fights for him right now. The Alvarez fight has been a complete non-starter to this point and I don't know how many people are really that interested in seeing an Aoki rematch in Japan. Never mind the fact that Strikeforce has kept him on the shelf for 10 months and counting now.

He seems to be rewarding a company that treated him well. Nothing wrong with that.

I like Strikeforce, but they do lack depth in their fighter roster. A talented guy like Melendez will soon not have legitimate competition at Strikeforce's lightweight division.

As a fan of mma I'm disappointed, after his last interview I thought he'd sign with the ufc. But if he's happy with SF then be it. Phone Post
