One of my favorite countries in the world of judo. Always enjoy watching its competitors. Anybody have any knowledge/experience about their training in general?

Their 2 best players are Sobirov 60K(Bronze at Beijing) and Tangriev100+k(Silver at Beijing)in the highlights. Their judo is a equal combination of attacks and counter throws, new form of kata garuma. 5-6 players ranked today in the top 16 of the male weight classes. I've got no personal experience.

Thanks, JBB. I remember when Tangriev beat Riner, thereby pre enting a Riner-Ishii final at Beijing.

Their judo is very effective, kind of reminds me of the Mongolian style of judo.

Yes, it's called Kurash. It's basically judo with no newaza, throws only. Participants wear a blue or green gi top with white pants.

Wasn't aware of Kurash. Thanks for the info, Dynamo.

^I think this one is really cool, and it probably gives us insight into some of the root folk styles that went into the formation of sambo.

Agreed.

You have to think that Central Asian styles would've had awesome exposure to, and influence by, the best wrestling had to offer by way of the Silk Road. Everything from bokh/shuai chiao/ssireum in the far east to the Indian/Arab styles to the south, and even the African/European styles to the west.

One more video; wasn't aware that Tangriev beat Kosei Inoue:

Not the most beautiful ippon I've watched, but I enjoyed it.

He prevented Inoue from getting his sleeve grip for his uchimata attempt. His size/skill was too much for an undersized Inoue to overcome. He played it very safe and let Inoue wear himself down. How many 100k natural fighters could move up to 100+ K and have success? Inoue did somewhat. Keji Suzuki is the only other.

Tangriev's ippon might not have been the prettiest ever, but it's certainly the coolest (triple)combination throw I've seen. Uchimata to ouchi to kouchi? Sweet! lol

As it was pointed out in the Zantaraia thread, Sobirov is currently riding a massive streak of victories.

(Incidentally, looked up Uzbekistan on Wikipedia: "In Uzbekistan about 45% of the population live on less than US$1.25 per day." Damn....)
