So I haven't even done my first class yet but start next Monday. I wanted to know what makes a good Judogi and if there is a specific brand anyone would suggest. Like I said, I am a beginner so I am looking for a gi that would be best for training at my level (basically I don't need a competition gi or anything).

Any tips? Advice?

Practically any judo dishrag will do in the beginning. First thing I'd do, however, is call the club you're gonna be training at to see if they either sell gis or have a stockpile of used gis members have donated. No sense in shopping online if you can buy local, right?

Nevertheless, here are some cheap, but still (decent) quality gis to choose from:

HSU makes very good, durable single weight judogi, at a reasonable price.

The club should have beginner gi(s) that you can try on. Most are single weave or 1 1/2 weave. I like the Mike Swain deluxe single weaves. I gave my old ones to the up and coming 15-16 yr olds. They are not too stiff like the double weaves and hold up much better than the single weaves.

Thanks for the input guys.

Much like judoblackbelt said, the club does have some extra gi's I can use for a while. They also sell gi's there so I should have no problems getting a hold of a good gi.

I am sure down the road that if I get more into Judo I will be buying a nicer gi but until then the house gi should work just fine!

I know 3rd/4th/5th degree's who wear some of the cheapest gi(s) around. They are done with competition. Not I. My judo is no way near their's but I want to look like it is with my 2 Mizuno Shai comp gi(s), one white, One blue. I hope to see the new Mizuno Yusho gi at the Nationals this year from the vendors. Anyone have one?
