...at least that's the way he tells it. Ricco was a guest on our podcast last week, and he gave us the behind the scenes story of why the UFC permanently banned him from the promotion. It's kind of crazy. Here's the gist:

RODRIGUEZ: "I wore a henna tattoo in my fight against Randy Couture, and at that time, the UFC was literally just building itself, we were only at 60,000 pay-per-view purchases [per event]. The Mohegan Sun and the Indian tribe allowed that fight to go on, and the truth is, they almost stopped that fight from happening. If that would have been the case, then I would have single-handedly destroyed the UFC.

CAGEPOTATO.COM: Because of a tattoo?

RODRIGUEZ: Yeah, there was a lot behind the scenes that a lot of people don’t understand. First of all, Lorenzo Fertitta, they own casinos, so when you own a casino, you have certain laws that are very strict…If you remember this fight, Bernard Hopkins vs. Felix Trinidad, Bernard Hopkins just got out of jail, he was approached by GoldenPalace.com to wear a henna tattoo. He took the $100,000 that they gave him, and he bet it on himself. He was a 4-1 underdog and he won the fight, and he won $400,000 plus his regular purse. So when the opportunity presented itself to me, I did the same exact thing. I was a 5-1 underdog, so I gambled on myself and I won that fight. And I made more than the UFC would have ever paid me. The UFC paid me $30,000 to show and $30,000 to win, and I put all my money on myself and I won half a million. So there’s a lot of things that people don’t understand. And this is why Dana White will never let me back in the UFC, and I totally understand. I respect that, and it is what it is...Lorenzo Fertitta came and did a walk with me right before the fight, and you know how terrifying that was?

Man Ricco was a mess back then, burned bridges everywhere he went and pissed away a ton of potential. I hope he has his shit together now.

There's a video of Dana White telling this story a long time ago, actually it was when he was on Tapout Radio.  He said the casino was almost about to shut down the entire fights just because of Ricco's body paint tattoo of a competitor.

Fair point (Although I am sure your statement will piss some people off)
He was only with the UFC from what? June of 01 to Feb of 03, less than two years.

Hopkins didn't just get out of jail before he fought Trinidad, did he?
That seems way off. As far as I can recall Hopkins only went to jail once, and has lead a clean and disciplined life since then.

If the promotion you fight for owns a gambling organization you cant bet money on yourself do to the fact that the fight could be fixed etc. Or if he's getting backed by another casino and he gambles that money on himself in a fight he could also fix then there's a problem there, plus your fighting under a promotion who also ownes casinos. Too many illegal ways to make money.

 from wikipedia:

Hopkins turned to crime early in his life. By the age of thirteen he was mugging people and had been stabbed three times. At seventeen, Hopkins was sentenced to 18 years in Graterford Prison for nine felonies. While in prison he witnessed rapes and the murder of another inmate in an argument over a pack of cigarettes, but also discovered his passion for boxing. After serving almost five years, Hopkins was released from prison in 1988, decided to use boxing as an escape from his previous life, and converted to Islam.[1] While leaving the prison for the final time, the warden told Hopkins he'd "see [Hopkins] again when you wind up back here," to which Hopkins replied "I ain't ever coming back here."
