joe bruce - Its not dead but pretty close. Unless the guy on top is really careless , the wrestling rules are too favorable for BJJ to be effective.

Party pooper.

Lol so everyone that gets submitted from the top is sloppy no matter what level they are fighting at. Yet is is pretty much dead because the rules favor wrestlers? your contradicting yourself without even realizing it. Isnt everything including getting knocked out the other person just getting sloppy with your logic? For example if they get knocked out , i guess they were just sloppy and didnt hold there hands up so punches are PRETTY much dead since you only get knocked out if your sloppy.

Really, cause none of these wrestler that are winning constantly are adept at BJJ. Please show me how just wrestling rules, no these wrestler winning have sick ass BJJ defense, and sick guard passing.

Only a fool would say its pretty close to being dead. Anderson submitting chael. sarcasm/ well chael has been tapped out by some BJJ black belts he got sloppy he sucks/ sarcasm

If the best wrestler are still getting submitted on top it is not dieing.

I will bet my life in ten years we will still be seeing the guard in MMA to say otherwise you really are a fool

Snarl Snatch - Fedor was in fact being sloppy. He got too eager to throw big punches and...that was that. There's only 2 ways a submission happens in a fight:

1) The guy tapping made a mistake

OR

2) The guy tapping was too weak to stop himself being muscled into the position

It can be a combo of both, but Fedor is certainly not weak.

Stop trolling with this false dichotomy nonsense.

Oh and Vinny totally put the ruse on me as well!

Of course it's not dead....but I keep on getting the implication that for some time I was considered a better or equal  position to top position.  When exactly was this?

Folks in BJJ pull when they think a guy will take them down and score points.  I'd say pretty much everybody in the sport of BJJ would rather have top and points if given the choice.

In MMA going back to the Gracies fighting, it's not like they didn't take top when the opportunity was there.  I haven't seen many quality grapplers presented with an easy takedown or sweep say, "eh fuck, it I'd rather just let it go and play off my back."

The gaurd will always be a secondary choice for virtually all fighters, and unless I've missed some kind of memo, it always has been.  This doesn't mean it's dead, it's just less effective.... it's ALWAYS been less effective.

i disagree,,, how many fights,,,would have been more exiting,,,,probably even more competitive,,if only the guy that kept shooting for a takedown and failing would have pulled guard?

Some guys have a sneaky guard... Arona's guard just flat-out roofies you. Lots of people waking up there.

to caveman dave: there was a time on this site (probably 10-12 years ago) where the guard from a BJJ player was considered nearly invincible. This site is heavily infused with people who are primarily BJJ practitioners

Then Kerr started killing people. Wrestlers would win, and the complaints would start that "he didn't even try to pass the guard, how could he have won?"

It's only really been in the past 5-6 years that the harder core BJJ players have come out and admitted that the guard is a less than neutral position in MMA. So, you're seeing old school comments through your newer school sensibilities

Guard is not dead. Fighters who rely on their jitz need to start focusing on having a more aggressive guard by chaining subs, and sweeps off of each other.

just a lot of guys dont have good guards.. look at jacare's guard for example.. guys need to go and train at alliance

rickson is saying the knee in guard is the 'new guard' for mma.. i seen minotauro using it last night and he took very little damage when using it.

I personally do not understand the lack of sweeps in MMA. You see guys waste a ton of energy trying to stand up but you hardly ever see sweeps. You see submission attempt after submission attempt but you hardly ever see sweeps. Even from high level BJJ guys. I see guys in position for sweeps all the time especially when in half guard. Vinny do you have any thoughts on this? Phone Post
