There are arguably only four non-UFC fighters ranked in the top five of their division. 'Jacare' Souza, Shinya Aoki, Eddie Alvarez, and Gil Melendez. With the UFC’s acquisition of Strikeforce, Melendez is excited to eventually get a chance to face MMA;s top lightweights.

But it starts  Saturday night, when 'El Nino' will defend his title in a rematch against Tatsuya Kawajiri in the Strikeforce “Diaz vs. Daley” co-main event.

“I think Kawajiri’s maintained (since the first fight in 2006, which Melendez won by unanimous decision). He’s strong, and I think he’s gonna try and use that on me,” Melendez says. “But I believe we’re in a little bit of a different situation. I’m a completely different fighter than I was three or four years ago. I don’t think he’s evolved as much as I have. I know he’ll want to put me on my back, mount me, and he’s strong in the clinch.”

“To be honest, I sat back and laughed a little bit (about the Strikeforce buyout). It’s funny, because I was renegotiating with Strikeforce and designed a deal with them. My other option was to sit out and go with the UFC. I was happy with Strikeforce and wanted them to show they were really serious, so I was happy with my decision."

“One of the things I was sad about was it’s hard to brand, market and get respect for yourself in Strikeforce. Now, I think I’m going to get the best of both worlds and have the marketing machine of Zuffa behind me. And I look forward to the bonuses. I feel like I’ve been a pretty well-kept secret to MMA fans. I’m not saying I’m gonna walk in and be champ, but I think I can get ‘Fight of the Night.’ I want to put on a show.”

(Non-UFC fighters) “seem to get respect from journalists and peers, but it’s a little frustrating with the common person -- Joe Schmoe at bars. The guy says, ‘Do you fight in the UFC? You’re No. 2 in the world? In the amateurs, right?’ Now I get a chance to prove myself.”

Does Eddie Alvarez not make the top 20 of these 'real mma rankings' either then?

Oldtimes - No it is hilarious , aoki might be top 5 in "japan mma"
but he would be very lucky to break top 20 in real mma

Will your opinion change if Kawajiri beats Gil?

alvarez and aoki deserve to me in the top ten, just not before frankie and gill and maynard. after that i dont think guys like miller, florian, pettis, guillard. have proved themselfs anymore than aoki or alvarez. in fact i think alvarez would be favored against all those guys.

Couldn't be any more right.  Good job.  All these guys that are trying to hold on to this "japan mma" will disagree, but that's expected.

Miller, Florian, Pettis and Guillard have no top 10 wins. Alvarez and Aoki do.

Also lol at anyone who doesnt think Werdum or Hioki are top 5 in their divisions.

KingstonHawke - Aoki top 5? Is that even an arguement? He's good enough to catch anyone in a submission... but who would he be favored against? I don't even think he'd be favored in with Alvarez if they fought again. I can list at least 10 guys who 80% of this forum would agree would beat Aoki. He's good, but we need to stop overrating some of these guys. Aoki's rank should be identical to Gomi's.

Aoki has 6 top 10 wins at 155, way more then anyone else.

Its not even debatable that he isnt top 5

You're fine with Alvarez though... How long did it take Aoki to sub Eddie once he got a hold of him again? 30 seconds?

Btw, I wouldn't rank Aoki in the top 5 either.

80% of this forum are about as in the know as you though.

KingstonHawke - He's good, but we need to stop overrating some of these guys.

"We" need to start basing rank and respect on results and not noobish or biased opinions.

KingstonHawke -Aoki's rank should be identical to Gomi's

Can you explain why in the real world, that should be the case? Ok, they're both of the same nationality. I know that probably is a high criteria in your world but it doesnt hold water in the real one.
