Rev 7

15 “That is why they stand in front of God’s throne
and serve him day and night in his Temple.
And he who sits on the throne
      will give them shelter.
 16 They will never again be hungry or thirsty;
they will never be scorched by the heat of the sun.
17 For the Lamb on the throne[c]
      will be their Shepherd.
He will lead them to springs of life-giving water.
And God will wipe every tear from their eyes.”

Why would the secularist want this?

Can you "make" youself believe something you don't?

Neither can I.

I'd love to know or believe that my mother is in heaven right now, but I simply can't believe it.

Where do you think she is?

makes me think of that article on the Orthodox view of Hell. Where everyone will return to God in the end, even if they have no desire to.

"all eventually will be in the fiery presence of the Lord, and this presence will be either "eternal torment" or "comfort and glory". Judgment and paradise both come from being in God's presence."

"Consider a person who hates God, and anything to do with religion, and has done nothing but pursued his own self-centered desires all his life. It would be far more terrifying, and painful, to spend eternity in the fiery embrace of God's almighty and divine love with no escape, than to be far from Him."

I think my mother is just gone and only lives on in people's memories.

The concept of heaven doesn't make sense to me - are we still the same people with the same personalities and the same fallabilities?

So, we're not really ourselves then right?

Would somebody stop telling dirty jokes once they get to heaven?

What about relationships? How does that work?

''So, we're not really ourselves then right? ''

we are our true selves, evolved in love and unbridled by sin. is a better you still yourself?

''Would somebody stop telling dirty jokes once they get to heaven? ''

it's not that the holy sanitation commission would put you in time out, but more a matter of being exposed to perfect love, revelation and unimaginable joy, why would you bother?

''What about relationships? How does that work?''

we will be clothed in bodies/vessels similar to angels, what the full extent of that means, I'm not sure.

^ Did you create that user name just to login and post those kind of comments on the HG?

I'm of the opinion that atheists are led around by their noses just as much as anybody else.

Magicmaninthesky - Religion is a system of control.

I can see that if you look at the corruption of the Church establishment though out history with the clergy controlling the masses. But the essence of Christianity is to break from the control of the establishment. That's how it began. And I really don't see the control today. If anything, a Christian would be less inclined to be a sheep than your average person who worships Hollywood movie stars and sports stars.

Magicmaninthesky - The concept of a "heaven" & "hell" is downright insulting to anyone with an ounce of real intelligence. Religion is a system of control & needs to have real perceived consequences to be effective. People are easily led around and are quite comfortable giving up their own free will & thoughts. It's much easier to live in a manner that someone outlines for you. Using your own brain & creating your own reality is a little too stressful for some. Sheep love being told what to do.

I dunno man. I think it's easier to do whatever the hell you desire. Isn't that basically what animals do?

^ it isn't easy to do whatever it is that you desire. We are all constrained by our culture to some degree, even if we are nto religious, and whether we are conscious of it or not and whether it is to our liking.

I'd say that our culture is pretty permissive though.

I don't think there is a uniform American culture though. It depends specifically on where you live and to what sub-culture one is attached.
