This is a video of a vicar from the Church of England who travels in the footsteps of St. Antony across the desert of Egypt.  His goal is to spend three weeks alone in a cave above the monastery of St. Antony to confront his "issues."  He is aided by a Coptic Anchorite named Fr. Lazarus (who speaks fluent English since he is Australian) who generously lends the vicar his cave.

This is a very interesting video just from the perspective of history and a travelogue, but if you are interested in what lies at the heart of monasticism it is even more interesting.  The concept of monasticism as an escape from reality is turned on its head.  The Desert Fathers did not go to the desert to flee worldly temptations.  They went to the desert to do battle with Satan just as Jesus did during his sojourn in the wilderness.
