Gil Melendez #1 in Fight! Rankings

FIGHT! Magazine believes there is a need for a completely objective and unbiased ranking system for fighters to replace the myriad subjective rankings that have become skewed, in many instances, by fighter popularity. In an effort to address this issue FIGHT! Magazine brings you its computerized rankings system which takes into account a fighters strength of opponent, strength of performance, and frequency of activity. Go here for a detailed explanation of how FIGHT!’s rankings work.

Gilbert Melendez has been saying it and now our rankings agree - “El Nino” is the #1 lightweight in MMA. Melendez faced Tatsuya Kawajiri in a Strikeforce Lightweight Championship fight on Sat. night in San Diego, but it didn’t last long as Skrap Pack leader dominated, demolished and dismantled Kawajiri in the first round, skipping over the UFC’s top dogs from #3 to #1 in the Lightweight Rankings. Kawajiri slips from #10 to #14 following the loss.

"Gilbert's one of the top guys in the world, no doubt about it," White said following a pre-fight press conference in support of UFC 129, which takes place Saturday at Rogers Centre in Toronto. "I love that kid."

"When we get these kids that come out of some other organization, they're just so fired up and ready. They see this stuff and what's going on here, and obviously (he's a) longtime Jake Shields friend and training partner and sees what Jake's going through right now.

"This is what guys dream about. If you're a fighter, this right here – what's happening today is what you dream about. He's sitting back there happy for Jake and pumped for him but going, 'Goddamn. When am I going to get my turn? I want something like this.'

"I see that in that kid every time I talk to him."

"He's a great guy and a talented fighter, and I'm excited for the day when we can make these fights happen."

Pre buyout Gil wouldn't even be Fucking Top 10 according to Dana. He'd be one of 'those guys' that the media makes up, getting him to say that about Gilbert would be like when he couldn't will himself to say a nice thing about Eddie Alvarez

Gil made a strong case for himself during his last title defense. IMO Edgar is still number 1 but Gil is a close second along with Maynard. Lightweight is ridiculously stacked right now, throw in Petis, Miller and Alvarez and you have prob the most dangerous division in MMA. Phone Post

It's the manner of the defeats. NOBODY has ever blasted out Kawajiri like that, Gil's been looking like a straight killer for awhile now.

That said I'd still rank Frankie first on accomplishment, not potential. But honestly I think Gilbert would beat him.

Don't be too hard on him, he's just fighting who they put in front of him. He just didn't beat Kawajiri, he annihilated him.

The beating he put on Kawijiri was a violent one sided affair, it reminded me of a J-Lau vs Gabe Ruediger-ish type beatdown.

Cant deny that last fight, but iirc he didnt exactly demolish Aoki. He sprawled a ton but no one really damaged the other. Part of that blame is on Aoki sure, but that fight sucked.

Wish the stupid upkick rule didn't exist. I still think Gil would have beaten Aoki but it would have been a more competitive fight.

I think Melendez and Maynard are basically in a tie for #2 right now. I really hope we get a unification later this year but I'm not too optimistic.

Did Aoki cry from being battered or just the fact that he has no wrestling and had to butt flop the entire fight?

I do tend to think that Edgar is too technically sound for Melendez. You never know, though. Melendez has improved a lot over the last few years and has been utterly dominating good fighters. He also fights with a certain uncommon ferocity that could put Edgar off his game.
