Côté Playing For High Stakes At Ringside 11

Patrick Côté has been fighting for a long time.

The 31-year-old spent seven years in the Canadian Army as a member of the famous Royal 22e Régiment, more widely know as the Van Doos.

He served in Bosnia in 2002 after the genocide, and he and his unit were responsible for collecting ammunition from former combatants and helping to clean up the country.  He says that it was not uncommon to come across people lying in the middle of a field with their legs blown off from landmines.

Côté also came under automatic weapons fire while serving in East Timor.

So it’s not surprising that after such harsh environments he decided to take up fighting as a way to relax, and this weekend Côté (14-7) will be meeting Todd Brown (15-3) in the main event at Ringside 11 in Quebec City.

He says that Brown is foremost in his mind, but he has other plans for later in 2011.

Horodecki vs. Cardinal Announced As Freedom Fight Main Event

As reported on MM-eh last week, London, Ontario’s Chris “The Polish Hammer” Horodecki (17-3) had been confirmed to be one half of the main event of the first Freedom Fight to return since 2008, but his opponent was unknown.

Now Freedom Fight President Pete Rodley has announced that Horodecki will be taking on tough Westerner Brad “The Bonesaw” Cardinal (13-6).

Cardinal has had a busy 2011, as this will be his fourth fight this year.  His last bout was a win over Jesse Gross at Wreck MMA in May, and he has still yet to fight against Daron Cruickshank at Slammer in the Hammer in Hamilton on June 17.

Cardinal trains at BDB Martial Arts in Calgary, alongside the UFC’s Nick Ring, as well as Brian and Sheila Bird.

John Alessio To Meet Josh Neer At Superior Cage Combat 2

John Alessio told MM-eh.ca a few weeks ago that he has been wanting to get a fight against an opponent worthy enough to highlight his not insignificant skills, with the hope of getting a long-awaited return invitation to the UFC.

It looks like Alessio (31-14) gotten his wish, as the 31-year-old told MM-eh that he’ll be fighting Josh “The Dentist” Neer (29-10-1) on august 20 at  Superior Cage Combat in the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas.

Initially the pair had been scheduled to fight different opponents, but the promoter was searching for a main event bout and they were able to put this match-up together.

When asked how he felt about facing Neer, Alessio burst out his answer with genuine enthusiasm.

“It’s awesome!” He said with a little laugh.

Alessio was in his teammate Mac Danzig’s corner when he fought Neer at UFC Fight Night 17 in 2009, so he’s aware of the skills that he brings to the table.

“I’ve always thought that it would be fun to fight a guy like Josh Neer who brings in forty fights like I do –  a veteran who’s been around the block.”

He added, “He’s fought a lot of names, I’ve fought a lot of names, it would just be good to test myself against him and try to pick up that really big win.”

After the Neer fight, Alessio expects to defend his Tachi Palace Welterweight Title in November against the winner of Jorge Lopez and Andre Galvao, who will be fighting a No. 1 contender match in August.

 Goodbye ‘Waterboy,’ Hello ‘Ares’

Rory Macdonald no longer wants to be known as the ‘Waterboy,’ a nickname that he has had for several years.

Instead, the 21-year-old welterweight wunderkind from Kelowna, British Columbia has decided that he wants a name that’s a little more martial, and he has selected ‘Ares.’ after the Greek God of war.

Macdonald initially made the notice on Twitter, but confirmed to MM-eh.ca via text message that Ares is indeed what he wants his new nickname to be.

Some might argue that one cannot give yourself a nickname, and that it is something that is given to you.  But Macdonald has already told the UFC, UFC President Dana White, and several MMA journalists that this is something that he’d like to keep.

Soszynski To Face Late Replacement Mike Massenzio At UFC 131

Winnipeg’s Krzysztof Soszynski (25-11-1) has had a bit of roller coaster with prospective opponents for this weekend’s UFC 131 in Vancouver.

First original opponent Anthony Perosh withrew due to injury and was replaced with Igor Pokrajac, but Pokrajac has also just suffered an injury 6 days out from this weekend’s card.

Now it will be UFC veteran Mike Massenzio (12-4) who will be stepping inside the Octagon on Saturday night to face him. Massenzio was 1-2 in his three-fight UFC stint, last losing to Brian Stann in August of 2010. It should be noted that Soszynski beat Stann at UFC 97 in 2009.?

Sarah Kaufman To Meet Liz Carmouche At Strikeforce Challengers in July

Former Strikeforce women’s champ Sarah Kaufman (13-1) has disclosed that she’ll be fighting Californian Liz Carmouche (5-1) on July 22 at Strikeforce Challengers 17 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Kaufman and Carmouche have something in common in that they each have one loss — to the same fighter.  Kaufman lost her Strikeforce belt to Marloes Coenen last October, while Carmouche lost to Coenen in March of this year.

Kaufman made the announcement on her own website, and she commented:

“This is a fight that was previously in the works, then cancelled when Liz stepped in to fight Marloes in March. It’s a great fight for the women’s 135lb division and a win would put me right in line for another title shot (at least I think it would). I’m excited for this fight and that Strikeforce has decided to put on this fight for the fans.”

All UFC 131 Prelims To Be Streamed On YouTube, Facebook, and SpikeTV

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will once again be airing preliminary fights for free on the internet and on SpikeTV for this weekend’s UFC 131 in Vancouver.

Sherdog.com first reported on Tuesday that the fights would air only on the UFC’s Official YouTube Channel, but the UFC’s Twitter account wrote today that five preliminary bouts would also be on their Facebook page, as has happened for the last several events.

Two out of the five scheduled Facebook/YouTube fights will feature Canadian fighters.

First Calgary’s Nick Ring (11-0) will take on James Head (7-1), then Winnipeg’s Krzysztof Soszynski (25-11-1) will meet late replacement Mike Massenzio (12-4).

As reported on MM-eh.ca earlier today, Massenzio accepted the fight on Sunday after Igor Pokrajac was forced to withdraw with an undisclosed injury.

After the five Facebook/YouTube fights are over, you can see another pair of Canadians fight on Spike TV at 8pm EST. Kenora, Ontario’s Jesse Bongfeldt (15-4-1) will square off with Chris Weidman (5-0), and London, Ontario’s Sam Stout (16-6-1) will take on Yves Edwards (40-16-1).

MM-eh Exclusive – Mein Speaks About Zaromskis And Future

Jordan “Young Guns” Mein is one of the best Canadian fighters who the average MMA fan has never heard of.

But that’s not to say that nobody has.

Anyone who’s been following the Canadian Mixed Martial Arts over the past few years knows exactly who the 21-year-old Lethbridge, Alberta native is, as he has been slowly working his way up the Canadian rankings, beating a who’s who of Canadian — and more recently International talent.

But to the casual fan, who more than likely knows only the names of fighters who they see in the UFC, Mein is an unknown.

Westcott Doesn’t Want To Kiss His Sister Again At MFC 30

If there’s anything in the world that Sheldon Westcott (4-1-1) hates more than losing a fight, it’s getting a tie.

The 26-year-old Edmonton fighter will step into the Maximum Fighting Championship ring on Friday night, looking to avenge what he considers to be a poor judging decision that saw him draw against Thomas “Wildman” Denny (27-18-1) at MFC 28 in February.

In the first round of that fight Westcott came out like a savage, brutalizing Denny for almost the entire 5-minute time frame and earning a 10-8 score.

Southern Looking For Challenge At The Score Fighting Series

Saskatoon’s Kurt Southern probably didn’t think that he would become a mixed martial artist when he first started wrestling.

But then the 28-year-old Saskatoon, Saskatchewan resident had probably never heard of mixed martial arts at that point.  You see, he was eight years old.

Southern wrestled competitively for thirteen years all the way into university.  But when he decided that he wanted to leave school, wrestling had to go as well.

But after two or three years Southern caught the fight bug and started training MMA at Alliance Martial Arts with Coach Graham Weenk.

In the past few years he’s done well for himself, racking up wins over notable fighters Martin Grandmont, Mukai Maromo, and most importantly to him a rematch with tough Brad Cardinal.

Ricci Injured – Wadsworth New Semi-Main Event At Challenge MMA

MM-eh has learned that the semi main event match up between Mike Ricci and Ricky Goodall has been scrapped after Ricci sustained an injury in training.

The bout had been scheduled for June 17 at the Pierre-Charbonneau Centre in Montreal.

Ricci told MM-eh that it was a bad ankle sprain that prevented him from even walking for the first week.  His Physician even told him that he could not spar for three weeks, so he reluctantly withdrew from the fight.

“I was sparring.” He explained. “I was getting in an exchange then moving out of the pocket.  I stepped to the side and that was it.  I stepped wrong and it twisted.”

A representative from Challenge MMA told MM-eh that Ricci’s departure necessitated some restructuring.

Moving up into the co main-event position along with the pairing of Steve Bossé and Emanuel Newton, will be Montreal prospect Tim Wadsworth (5-0).  BTT Canada‘s Wadsworth will be taking on Edmontonian Rob Roy (3-4).

 Interview With Mike Kent

by Tyler Kaizer

Mike Kent is facing a tough test when he takes on Alderic Keith for the middleweight title this Saturday night in the co-main event of Canadian Extreme Cage Rage’s debut event in Moncton, New Brunswick tonight.  This is a rematch of a fight that saw the two engage in a back and forth battle that saw Kent emerge with a hard-fought split decision victory.

After this bout he will be fighting Allen Hope at “Throwdown in Y-Town” at the Mariner Center in Yarmouth on June 25.

We talk about his upcoming fight, and the preparation and inspiration behind it.

TK- What sparked your interest in the sport?

MK- I originally only wanted to kickbox but I wanted to test myself so I got in to MMA. There wasn’t much competition in kickboxing but there were events in mixed martial arts so that’s where it lead me.

Mike Ricci Wants The Ringside Lightweight Belt

Mike Ricci (6-1) has been long thought to be one of the top prospects to emerge from the Montreal mixed martial arts scene in the past few years.

The 26-year-old fighter trains at the acclaimed Tristar Gym under head coach Firas Zahabi, alongside the UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and an uncounted number of high-level fighters.

It looked like he was about to make his major break in April 2010 when he entered the Bellator Season 2 lightweight tournament, but a shocking knockout just three minutes into his fight against Pat Curran saw that door close.

Ricci decided to take a year off so that he could hone his techniques, and that appeared to do well for him as he returned to punch out another top prospect in Jesse Ronson at Ringside 1o on April 9.

As with other fighters on the rise, Ricci wants to keep fighting and beating quality opponents with names that will look good on his resume, and that isn’t always an easy thing to do.

Alex Garcia vs. Matt MacGrath Penciled For Ringside 12

MM-eh has learned that two of Canada’s top welterweights will vie  for Ringside MMA’s No. 1 contender status this fall.

Ringside 12 is scheduled for Montreal’s Bell Centre on Oct 21, and will feature a match-up between Montreal’s Alex Garcia (6-1) and Charlottetown’s Matt MacGrath (10-6).

The only question now is, who will the winner get the privilege to fight?

“The Ultimate Fighter” Season 11 participant Seth Baczynski beat Garcia in April to claim the interim title while champion Chris Clements recovers from an ankle injury.

It is unclear whether the winner of Garcia/MacGrath will face Baczynski or Clements.

A Tristar Gym product, Garcia is sometimes jokingly referred to as Alex Lombard by his teammates due to his resemblance to American Top Team standout Hector Lombard.  Garcia is dangerous on the ground as well as on his feet, and his explosive power is a threat to everyone he faces.

MacGrath is the Head MMA Coach at Rikidokan and one of the busiest fighters in Canada right now, this being his fourth fight in 2011 since signing with new manager Robin Black.  He has been the go-to guy for many promoters recently who know that he is always in shape and is usually willing to accept tough fights on short notice.  Out of his six losses, all but one of them come from UFC veterans, the most recent being an armbar loss that he suffered from Marcus Aurelio at MMA Live 1 last month.  He took that fight on just over a week’s notice when Aurelio’s original opponent Cory Macdonald withdrew due to undisclosed medical reasons.

The Break Of Day

April 19, 2008 was a very good day for Jason Day (19-11).

That was the day that the 32-year-old Lethbridge native was rewarded for his six years of hard fighting on the Western Canadian mixed martial arts circuit with a coveted spot in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Not only was he now in the world’s largest MMA organization, he was also on the fight card for their first ever venture onto Canadian soil at UFC 83.

That night in the Bell Centre Day surprised nearly every foreign MMA pundit when he easily dismantled top prospect Alan Belcher.

He was on top of the world.

But MMA is just another segment of life and it follows all of the same rules.  The faster you climb, the faster you fall.

Day wasn’t as fortunate in his next two outings, losing to both Michael Bisping and Kendall Grove.

Then the UFC released him.

Mike Ricci gets his wish — fighting for Ringside title in October

MM-eh.ca has learned that Montreal’s Mike Ricci will be getting a shot at the Ringside MMA Lightweight Title this October 21 at Ringside 12.

Ricci’s manager confirmed the bout with MM-eh on Monday, and although no opponent has been named he does not believe that it will be champ Guillaume DeLorenzi, who has been out with an injury for over a year.

This news comes just days after Ricci made a case for himself in an interview with MM-eh.

A message left with Ringside MMA President Eric Champoux was not returned by the time this article was published.
