why is it that thai fighters throw one or two punches at a time. i rarely see any combos of longer duration. even when hitting the pads they may simply throw a straight right or a right hand, high kick. but rarely do i see any combos of more than 1 or 2 shots at a time.

why is that?

 imho 2 possible factors -

range - kicks rule mt scoring and if you're not kicking you should be throwing knees. so naturally the most common strikes are going to be straight punches at the edge of their range to setup and follow kicks.

Muay thai is a counter fighting based game at mid to high levels. these fighters all have rock solid defense so it's a matter of "attacks by opporitunity" and then capitalizing on the moment with a flurry.
