A bill to legalize mixed martial arts is on the move—but it’s still on uncertain ground in the Legislature.

The Senate passed a bill to drop New York’s ban on the sport late last month in a bipartisan, 48-12 vote. An Assembly committee is expected to pass the bill in a June 7 meeting.

Still, one of the bill’s most vocal opponents doubts it will advance.

“It’s a dead issue for this session,” said Assemblyman Bob Reilly (D-Latham), who has decried the sport as being too brutal and violent.

“There’s less than 10 days of session left, and I don’t think it’s sufficient time to vet this subject as needed,” Reilly added, noting that the session ends on June 20.

Other of Reilly’s Assembly colleagues said it’s not clear how the majority of Democrats would vote—or whether any Republicans would join supporters of the bill. Democrats hold a 99-51 margin in the chamber.

“There is a healthy controversy. There are very concerned members of the majority who can’t support it this year, as they could not support it in years past,” Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Long Island) said on Thursday.

Englebright is sponsoring the bill. He also chairs the committee on tourism, arts and sports development, which will consider the mixed martial arts bill next week. Englebright said he has the votes to pass the bill out of his committee.

Last year, a similar bill cleared Englebright’s committee after also clearing the Senate in a tight 32-29 vote. Assembly leadership decided not to bring it to the floor for a vote.

“I imagine we’ll have similar blockage or stoppage,” Englebright said. “But, you never know. There are quite a few new faces in the chamber this year. I haven’t seen a sea change, but I have seen subtle changes.”

Reilly paints a different picture than what i heard. there's about a 60% chance it gets done this session. it will pass if it makes it to the floor. the only roadblock is getting is through two more committees (which can be done in less than a day) and getting sheldon silver to call it to the floor for a vote.

Curious if Dana or anyone from Zuffa has ever tried meeting with him. I think he needs a crash-course education in MMA, a lot of his reasonings are based soley off assumptions and pre-determined biased judgments.

Reilly just doesn't want to hear it, even when he is proved to be incorrect.

Jeff Blatnick lives in Reilly's district as well. If anyone can explain the rules and precautions that were implemented to make it safer, none better than the former UFC Commissioner.

People have tried to educate him, but he refuses to acknowledge the facts and continues to spew incorrect information or outdated stats.

Reilly again, is not the problem. He is just the face and most vocal opponent.

This is not about safety of fighters, or promoting violence to children. It is about unions, lobbyists, and the old boxing regime doing everything they can to hold on to what little $ and power they have left.

MMA is not safe.  It is violent.  It doesn't matter how you slice it.  I spoke to my Assemblyman about this and when I brought up the boxing vs. MMA safety issues, that didn't change his opinion.  He said it looks like a brutal sport and that's because it is.  Trying to win the political battle based on how safe it is or how much safer it is than other sports is a losing proposition.  It has to be won on the grounds that it will bring substantial revenue to the state--which really hasn't been demonstrated sufficiently despite Zuffa's accounting voodoo or that in spite of its brutality, there is some possible upside.

This Bob Reilly makes me wanna puke every time I see some bullshit article including a sentence from something stupid he has said.

Someone tell them how much money and jobs would come about having MMA legalized in New York so we can help our economy.

And yet Philip Nover will be fighting in NYC tonight.....

The Fights: You'll watch over a dozen matches of aggressive amateur Muay Thai that kick (!) off with a stacked undercard -- including a punishing girl-vs.-girl gauntlet featuring a pair of bantam beauties -- before fights featuring UFC stars Phillipe Nover & Brodie Farber.

The Entertainment: You'll rock to original techno and house tracks between bouts from Jesse Felluss of DJ of NYC’s Nue Pourn, so... expect a Vivid scene?

crazy for public officials to slit their own throats, that Culinary Union can't possibly be paying them off more than what all the cash MMA would bring to NY is worth...

Kunzy - Liberalism is a mental disorder.
LOL @ you. A conservative is what put MMA in the dark ages in the first place, let's not make this a right/left issue considering Harry Reid is doing more than any other conservative on this front.
