That is pretty good, unless you have long enough fingers to extend past the end of the glove. I remember seeing plenty of guys in PRIDE whose fingers extended out enough to facilitate a potential eye-poke.

This sounds like a good idea but somehow I still see it causing eye pokes Phone Post

Joe Rogan -
Bentleysuper8 - Is Joe trolling us? Out of curiosity, how many fights get stopped for other reasons? Nut shots or whatever. Is eye poking really so rampant that we need to change the gloves? I'd be interested to see UFC stats.

Diamond MMA might very well have a solution for nut shots.  They have a special cup with a pair of compression shorts that keep everything in place.  They're sending me over one to try, and they're very confident about their product.  I'm looking forward to trying it out, and if it works I'm going to promote it as much as possible.

Joe, the jaco guardian cup system is perfect imo. I really don't think there is a better way to protect you nuts than what they provide.

It is a mix betweena compression short and a muay thai cup.

So who does the MMA community have to talk to in order for the cloves and cup to take effect?

Joe Rogan -
Gokudamus stole my name - Nutshots suck but they are more an annoyance than a true problem. Detached retinas could end careers so it actually is a problem that will have to get dealt with eventually

Brian Foster just lost a testicle to a nut shot in the gym. I would have to say that's a bit more than an annoyance.

Joe Rogan - I was really enjoying the Justin Wilcox vs JZ fight last night up until that eye poke, and it got me thinking again about an idea I had. There's always going to be a problem with open handed gloves, but I was wondering if there was a solution where we could develop a glove that covered the tips of the fingers and kept them all together like a speed bag glove. We would still have to worry about the thumb, but I think it could prevent at least some of the eye pokes from open hand pushes.

What I was thinking was a thin leather cover for the 4 fingers with some elastic on the sides so that it could spread out a bit to adjust grip. I don't think it would hinder grappling too much if done properly, and it might even help because it would provide traction when gripping that bare sweaty fingers wouldn't.

We obviously have a real problem with the gloves the way they are, and I haven't heard anyone come up with any solutions. I think this might work.
What say ye, UG?

Fingertips covered by a thin mitt. Like bag gloves.

Seriously it wouldnt interfere with submissions any more than the current gloves.

fingernail to the eye has ruined more fights than 'mitted' hands will ever ruin subs.

"mitten" style gloves are a great idea...and when the fighters hit the ground, they can switch them for "fingered" ones so they can grab better. :-/

bigger penalties for eyepokes to start...

Guys eyepoke unitentionally mostly...but they can train themselves to not eyepoke at all.

I see it happen alot when guys are sparring with mma gloves,  I just tell them to make a concious effort to close your hands when you punch.  It Does help after awhile guys get conditioned to close their hands.

I am all for a glove that prevent eyepokes if it doesnt hurt othetr aspects of grappling.

Auto 10% purse deduction for 1st eyepoke, 20% for second 3 and your DQed...

I bet eyepokes get cut in half at least...

The Horror - How the fuck are goggles going to stay on when you're scrambling to get out of a guillotine attempt? Are you guys seriously that fucking high. Do you know what would happen to your orbital bones from taking heavy blows on these goggles? It isolates the force into an oval instead of dispersing around the bone structure.

Tap yourself in the eye with a boxing glove. Then put a pair of goggles on and do the same thing.

For the last time.

The goggles do nothing!

You have me convinced the goggles are not the answer.

Anything that holds a fighter fingers close together would be a disadvantage for a grapplers grip. It wouldn't allow a fighter to lock their hands together. Only true solution without affecting the current MMA product would be a thin leather glove that's put over a fighters tapped hand. Then the current MMA glove placed over top of that. It would sure be hot to wear though. Phone Post

Not sure there is a clear solution to eyepokes, but this is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed. That Wilcox injury was pretty scary to watch live.

Those romo'd mitts actually seem like an interesting starting point. Phone Post

we need to try something. I think a leather glove, as you said like a speed bag glove, that leaves an open palm could work, it would have to be thin around the tips of the fingers, especially once it the leather goes over into the front of the fingers.

no goggles, none of that jazz.

I say keep the current glove because fighters will not be able to do the UG sign with a closed finger design glove.

sickdarce - It doesn't happen enough to justify changing the gloves, end thread.

It shouldn't happen at all. And if it can be prevented without affecting anything major then why not do it?

Agreed—bigger or more consistent penalties may help. Changing the gloves isn't a realistic option.

I like the idea of a mitten style glove.

I also want there to be a commercial involving MMA fighters building a snowman, when suddenly a rumble breaks out.

Hell, with CGI the snowman could be one of the competitors.

Bonnar vs Frosty ftw Phone Post
