On the latest episode of Brazil’s “Sensei Sportv” television program, Royce Gracie addressed retirement, his desire to have one last battle, Matt Hughes, Renzo, the new Gracies coming up the ranks, and he opened up about what a Royce Gracie fight purse is like. Below are exceprts from the piece.

“I only listen to my coaches, who I want to listen to. The others don’t matter to me.”

“Matt Hughes in the octagon in Rio would be ideal. He’s the one I’m after.”

“In that fight with him I’d gone overboard in training. Dad told me: “That’s a mistake.”

“If I could, I’d only eat fruit.”

“I’ve been doing Jiu-Jitsu for 44 years. I always kept my mind open to other styles but just to know what I may be up against. I’m not going to learn wrestling to try and take down Matt Hughes.”

“MMA? You practice a martial art. Nogueira’s done Jiu-Jitsu his whole life, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t complement that with boxing. Now if I go and train MMA, what does that mean? Training MMA is Kimbo Slice. Can he stand and bang with a boxer? No. Can he put up a good fight on the ground? No. He’s a tough guy, but he’s not good. MMA isn’t a martial art. You have to have somewhere you come from, you have to know an art.”

“Dana White knows what I’m worth; he knows what I bring to the table. Yes, my fight purse has seven digits!”

Yes, if you write it like "$50,000.00," it does have seven digits.

lol at paying 7 figures for a 2011 Royce. Royce is backwards on MMA, the days of single disciple fighters dominating is ending. I dunno where he gets off using Kimbo of all people to illustrate what training mma gets you. Jon Jones, Edgar, GSP much better examples, but they destroy his theory, Phone Post

at the risk of being flamed, I think in 2011 if u magically take away Kimbo's knee issue, he is a better p4p fighter than royce. Kimbo has as much chance of outslugging a semi-known HW as Royce has of subbing any known welterweight.

Interesting..

Most top guys have a primary or base style. Gsp might be the first hybrid Mma guy. It definatley helps to be good in several arts. Cain. Jds. Fedor. A.silva. gsp. Diaz. Etc...

One dimension is not gonna take it. I love royce but hughes will smash him again imo.

I understand the current philosophy of being well versed in many dispciplines of MMA in order to compete at the highest level, however I do understand where Royce is coming from.  If an MMA fighter doesn't truly dedicate himself to specific martial arts (and by this I mean being good enough in a particular discipline to successfully compete at the highest level of that discipline) then he will just be sub par in multiple disciplines and a not very good fighter.  If Anderson Silva wasn't incredible at Muay Thai and he just trained in it enough to be competent in an MMA match he would be middle of the road MMA fighter at best.  Same goes for Fedor with Sambo, Matt Hughes with wrestling, and of course Royce with BJJ.

That's not to say that MMA fighters shouldn't learn enough about all disciplines to atleast be competent, but to rise above the pack they should truly master some as well.

each one of them had a base art which they excelled at and then transitioned. he is saying the jack of all trades master of none is a mistake. thats his opinion, since he's been doing this for a while now and has been around the fight game for nearly 20 years he's entitled to an opinion

This is true, look at alot of these cookie cutter "mma fighters" that show up on TUF. Most of them seem like their base style is tattoos, or drinking.

Exactly, and look at it..all cookie cutter bullshit. None of them stand out whatsoever as being amazing in one any one area of the game.

Rd 1

Piss poor amateur hour kick boxing match

Rd 2

Rinse and repeat, maybe trip to the ground for some sloppy low blue belt level BJJ

Rd 3

Rinse and Repeat Rd 1 and 2

Fight over!

"Awesome fight".."What a war". lol

Dude you missed my point completely, all those guys had a base, yes, but they train mma the "new way" and dont just focus on their specialty as was done earlier on. All 3 of those fighters can fight you anywhere. Phone Post

I thought the lesson everyone learned from MMA was that you had to be well rounded and train all facets of the game otherwise you would run into someone who will see your weakness in an area and exploit it.  You had to be able to fight wherever the match took you (ground, standing, clinch, etc).  Now Royce comes out with his old school opinion (this is the guy who said MANY times that all he needed was gracie jiu-jitsu) and people start agreeing with him and ignoring the years of MMA lessons we learned since Royce's days in the one dimensional UFC when he would fight guys who had never seen bjj and didn't even know what a triangle was.

Pretty much agree on the TUF point.

Most boring fights of last season involved Both of Javier fights, and Chris Kope fights, whose fights play out as described above. Phone Post
