At the NYC Ultimate Absolute, Rustam Chsiev proved once again that you don't need the gi to be at the most elite level in submission grappling.

In the early rounds of the tournament, Chsiev beat Alex Ceconi (a Rillion Gracie BB who recently beat Rafael Lovato), Davi Ramos (who beat Jao Assis earlier this month), and then the famous Roberto Cyborg Abreu to get into the finals.

In the finals, Chsiev battled Andre Galvao into a scoreless overtime and then into a scoreless sudden death 2nd overtime. Only then was Galvao able to win by a judges decision.

Rustam tapping the larger Alex Ceconi (who beat Romulo Barral to win 2010 ADCC Pro World Black Belt Gi).

Ceconi: "Hey this call just came in for you. Just answer it with both hands so I can try to escape."

I don't know what people will end up calling this move. But it looks like it replicates the same pressure and shoulder/throat position as an arm triangle.

This is the first time i have seen Rostam - what nationality is this guy?

His style is excellent - exciting and looking for the finish. Plus i think that i know how he subbed his opponent. I was taught this by a former greco internationl and its a combination of a shoulder crank and choke. Its a very, very crushing position.

I think someone in another thread said he was Ossetian which would be consistent with this statement from the bio of his coach (Murat Keshtov):

"He has a strong wrestling
background that is typical to North Caucasus discipline."
