So, I was cruising cragislist last Friday when I see a Hamilton flat file listed for $20. I though the seller forgot to add a zero or something??? I proceed to call the guy and arrange a pick up a few hours later, when I got there I saw a little rust nothing major just wanted to get it out of there before he changed his mind it wasn't until I got it home that I realized what a project was.

yeah, those wood deviders where SCREWED IN!!!! 20 screws per shelf! It took me 5 hours to hammer and sand all of the holes in every shelf.

The new stuido lights hepled dry the paint faster and that saved some time.

I just put a few posters in and on it to take the pic's, it will be a few weeks and a couple scrub downs before I trust the new paint.

all in all the file was $20 + $50 for paint + $20 for sand paper and 13 hours of my time..... $0! so a $90 total investment, not to bad I think because they usually retail for 2K.

Thanks guys! It takes up a lot of space 55 X 45 but if your serious about long term storage it's a must. Poly or mylar bags are going to be my next purchase.

I'm shocked at some of the deals i've been finding on craigslist lately, it's definitly a new hunting ground of mine.

I can put 100+ per stack easy 200 per drawer, but if they are bagged and boarded maybe 30ish per stack... I keep my poster room bone dry with a dehumidifier all summer long and in the winter I don't worry. The weight of all of the posters is a good thing imo as long as the bottom of the file is "FLAT" , also don't put smaller posters under bigger one's.

I was using neodymium earth magnets to hold the posters flat at first but they tend to leave presure marks on posters that want to roll back up, so now I use books, programs, flyers and magazines to weight the corners down safely. It get's a little messy but it's better at flating out the posters.

Yeah, I'm drooling too. I came across one before I started collecting posters while I was shopping for work. Was down at the local liquidation store where the gov't offices get rid of their shit and they were selling for about $100 each if I remember right. Really pissed because now I have a use for one! Great setup there Chip, very cool.

ever since chip found this on craigs list i have been checking the san diego craigs list for flat files. well my lucky day came sunday when a flat file went on craigs list for free. you just had to come and pick it up. I got it and it is pretty nice. has very minor rust in 2 small spots and some stickers on it. I will sand off the rust, remove the stickers, take out the flaps in each drawer and repaint it black. its gonna be a few weeks until its done because i am super busy but will post photos when its completed.

after minor sanding, cleaning of handles and paint here is the final product. I love how it turned out. not bad for free and about $25 in paint and sand paper.
