So now there are tiered accounts because it costs $300 a year to host the site and horrible forum?

C'mon man. Asking for donations is fine, but for such a small forum, you need to sell memberships in order to access some of the areas?

Maybe if the forum had a better layout and improved features, like free PHPBB boards, but combining a shitty layout, with a pay account, doesn't seem like a formula for a successful forum.

I host 3 websites and my belt forum for under $300 a year. I pay out of pocket for that, and I make well more than that by selling items, so it's not a big deal.

I'm kind of tempted at this point to start my own free MMA memorabilia forum with all the better features than this shithole, and without membership fees like MMAGraphing.

Not sure if there is enough demand to make it a separate forum, or make it a separate subforum, then buy a domain name and redirect it to the MMA Sub Forum of my site.

For me I think it is a good site to at least get started in the autograph world. And yea, it is tied. But at 5 dollars it isn't really going to break anyone. I can at least say it def helped me get into the whole graphing and memorabilia game.

I had an account there prior to the pay requirements. So it's only a one time payment of $5 to gain access to the entire site? Phone Post

I've seen better free forums than that one. pretty lame, and just plain lazy imo.

 and lol at this

Welcome to the best website on the internet devoted to the hobby of collecting autographs from people in the world of MMA. Feel free to browse the site, but in order to take advantage of all the benefits MMAG has to offer, you must become a Donating Member. To find out what those benefits are, please visit the Why Donate page or scroll to the bottom of this page for more information. So go ahead and sign up! You will not regret it.

it's not a donation if you make people pay you to access something. Its called a fee. Donating is when people give you money for nothing in return or because they want to help out. not because they have to to gain access.

I was a bit confused by this as well. A fee and donation are two different things. A donation usually means it's optional. Charging ppl to access part of a site is a fee. Phone Post

Points taken. The site is non-profit, hence why I used the term 'donation'. I have thought about rewording, but never bothered.

And, yes, you are semi-correct in stating that the forum is lame. I found it lame, clunky and visually unappealing. It served its purpose. That is why a new phpbb based forum was built a few weeks ago to replace the old forum. The new forum is light years better than the old. After taking 20 minutes to learn how to set up and admin a phpbb forum, I knew I picked a winner that members would really enjoy.

Lazy? If that was directed at me personally, well, no. I am far from it. The old forum was a hard coded application that had very limited customization controls for the admin to use. The application itself was 'lazy', but that was out of my control.

by "lazy" i mean not much thought seemed to go into the set up and look of the forum. It wasn't a personal dig at you,it just seems quickly thrown together, and honestly very bland.

It's cool what you are doing. some people seem to really enjoy your site, but in this day and age if you want new members you need something appealing. your forum doesn't seem to have much appeal and visually is just plain ugly.

If you are doing it for fun then awesome. be ahppy with what you have. IF you are trying to make a few bucks and build something bigger, you need to change things.

As I stated before, a new forum was built. You were obviously clicking on the 'old forum' sublink and looking at that. The new phpbb styled forum is what is being used now. The interface is just like PTSandman's forums, just available in different styles depending on which style the user picks. Probably the most heavily implemented style of forum that is on the net today. It makes the style of forum used here at the Underground look generic at best and easily bests the old style of forum I had used before.

The members love the new forum. Thats all that really counts to me since I didn't build a new one for my own needs. It's all about them.

And, no, I have not thought about adding useless graphics that do not pertain to the site or forum except the mmagraphing logo. Thanks for the suggestion though.

As far as having something 'appealing', content is the main focus, and there is a a lot of that there. That site was whipped up mainly due to me having a class project where I was to build a simple site and submit it for a grade. Not to 'make a few bucks'. When it is redesigned later in the year, it will look and feel much better. In time, they will be able to say the site looks pretty.

New members don't necessarily want what you are stating as far as your idea of appeal. They want information, content and the ability to network with fellow hobbyists. Something they can use. They have all 3 and much more.

It's still ridiculous to charge people money to join a forum.

Curious how your site costs $300 a year to run though.

Still, that shouldn't be the responsibility of the members. Shouldn't cost more than $150 to run a site that size a year, and that can easily be covered by donations.

He stated the site was not appealing and that it was ugly. Nothing stated as to what those appeals were so I ran with how he thinks the site is ugly as this is what doesn't appeal to him.

He did not state any other appeals, or in this case, non appeals, besides the looks. Maybe FerrozoFan should verify by listing the things other than looks of a forum that he finds appealing.

If he feels that this forum offers what is appealing to him outside of looks, such as forum content and networking, well, everything members here talk about and discuss are are the same things members at mmag discuss, and they network in the same fashion.

Can you get me any Strikeforce gloves?

They are not only joining a forum, Dan. They are joining a site.

It does not cost $300 to run it. Running it entails spending for Contest prizes as well as hosting and domain name fees. Although some members do donate items to be used as prizes, which I appreciate greatly, the shipping to acquire the supplies used for the those prizes and sending them off to the winners costs money. The added funds are used for anything from photos to graphing supplies to gloves. It adds up. It will be cheaper next year when I move the domain as the cost is much cheaper at the host of the new forum.

Still, that shouldn't be the responsibility of the members. Shouldn't cost more than $150 to run a site that size a year, and that can easily be covered by donations.

That is your opinion, so I respect that. But they do not mind helping fund the site because of the positives they get in return.

Look, I am not here to pimp the site. I am here to try to enjoy this forum and maybe make some friends. Seems like there are some good guys here.

@Dawggy
Glad to help. Looking forward to seeing you around.

Boss, I do not think that at all. That is another reason I decided to get out of lurking mode and join here. There are so many guys here that are knowledgeable about, not only the hobby, but mma as well.

I look at the post counts of some of the guys here. Some of those numbers are astounding. To me, they indicate one of two things: That they are knowledgeable about the hobby and probably mma in general; or that they are spammers whose words are useless. lol. After reading a lot of posts here since I started lurking a couple years ago, I can differentiate between the rookies and experienced graphers. A good mix of both, but I tend to pay more attention to the experienced guy's posts. And I have read a lot of stuff that has helped me with the hobby here.

By reading some older threads, I can see that things get ugly around here sometimes. It doesn't get like that on my end, so it is good to see since it kind of helps me in how my site is run. Do I like seeing people ruthlessly ripping into people? Of course not, but it is helpful.

I like this forum. Tons of info and knowledge about the hobby and some good members.

I'm glad you made that post. Thanks.
