One thing I have noticed and have mentioned before is that melee is much stronger in this game as opposed to Demon's Souls. Once you get some badass armor and a heavy weapon, you can brute force a lot of bosses and just smash the bejesus out of them. Of course this isn't at all feasible early in the game but once you pump your VIT, END, STR and DEX/RES if you want it becomes MUCH easier.

For instance The Four Kings are considered one of the toughest bosses in the game. Yet with Havel's armor and a good weapon you can just run in there and smash them before all four even show up. Seen it tons of times on streams and it makes me happy as I don't care too much for magic, would rather hammer my enemies with my own hands ;)

For fuck sakes Intelligence doesn't affect pyromancy, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!

Well I guess I'm a melee, pyro and part-time sorcerer.

Shield, Lightning Axe + 5, Pyro and Heavy Soul Arrow, Gold Hemmed Robes.

omgjoshjames,

Early in the game you can get Sorcerer Armor when you free buddy from the bottom part of Undead Burg or there is some Leather Thief Gear that you get in there too. Switch between both based on resistance needs. Keep your original stuff as that is still useful in some places.

The best stuff I've got so far is the Gold Hemmed set from the Ceaseless Discharge area after Chaos Witch Quelaag. I haven't switched from that stuff yet.

Also after you ring the second bell the soul keeper in Firelit will be dead who drops some hi level curse resistance stuff you will want to keep for later areas.

I'd also keep most of the 'named' shields on you as they each will protect 100% from melee but each has a different set of resistances.

Basically if you combine the right armor, ring and shield you should max the resistance you need to stop from getting poisoned or cursed and as well maybe stop from getting one-shotted by bosses.

I finally killed Ornstein last night. My day is so much brighter today!

raoulDuke -  im a little over 10 hrs in....

are the cracked red eye orbs the only way to invade other worlds? i have the white soapstone, and was really hoping to find a black 1 so i could rape some peeps in pvp mode....it costs souls now to invade?
WEAK. FUCKING. SAUCE

game is a lot of fun but shit like this pisses me off. also wtf @ having to buy armor instead of the bosses dropping shit? so fuckin weak.

also...the atmosphere is nowhere near as bleak/grim as demon's souls was, IMO. not nearly as 'spooky' imo.

and i really, really, REALLY miss the fucking nexus

i keep forgetting what ladder or staircase to take in this huge, gay ass castle. its like demon's souls stuck inside the castle from ICO

The red eye orbs are not the only way to invade. If you are part of the Forest, Darkmoon Blade or Dark Wraith covenants you are given options to invade.

Forest gives you a cat summoning ring that will have you invade any player who enters the forest who isn't a member for the covenant. After 3-5 kills you get the mist ring, which makes it so people can't lock on to you. Incredibly cheap for PvP (player versus player) and frankly I think if you need the mist ring to invade you are a vagina.

Darkmood Blades allow you to invade other members who are similar soul level and who have broken their allegience with a covenant and you get to hunt them down. You can be anywhere in the world and get summoned to invade.

Last is the Dark Wraith covenant which is THE invading covenant. You are given the Dark Hand which has an attack that lets you steal humanity from players as well as an item that lets you invade as much as you want.

So many options for invasions outside of the red eye orb.

Poison is removed by using purple moss clumps or the blooming version. Only the blooming version can stop toxic and you know when you are hit with toxic because it is MUCH faster than poison and can kill even hardy characters super quick.

They are sold by the undead lady merchant near the Depths but a faster way to get them is to farm them from the tree men in the forest. They drop these and the red moss clumps (which stop bleeding iirc) like crazy. You will need them for Blight Town because eveything likes to poison you there, even the environment. Honestly, I hate BT more than anywhere else in the game. The enemies aren't hard so much as they are incredibly cheap. Packs of dogs who breathe fire, giant fat men with poison clubs and these little fuckers who sit on high ledges and shoot toxic darts at you. Not poison, fucking toxic.

Depends on how you are playing. Since INT doesn't make Pyro spells stronger (upgrading your catalyst does, though for some reason it says that the catalyst scales with INT but this affects the melee attack, not spells. Kinda dumb but w/e) are you making a more strict magic user or a melee/pyro hybrid?

If you are going the way of the magic user a pretty decent armor that you can get early is the black leather set. You can obtain it on the way to the Capra Demon where all those dogs and thieves jump you, it's in one of the buildings. After you ring the second bell there is the Gold Hewn Robe set in the Demon's Ruins in the area where you fight the Ceaseless Demon. Even if you aren't strong enough to kill him, do a suicide run and grab the armor in the far corner.

It's incredibly light, has great defense against most everything and will last you a good long while. Hell, this set is even good for the melee/pyro hybrid until you can get something stronger later in the game. Right now I'm playing strictly melee/bow with no magic and I'm using the Gold Hewn Robes because they are better than anything else I got at SL 40.

My mistake, lush already hit on the Robe set and he is very much correct. Great armor for much of the game. Also lush, your soul arrows ARE affected by intelligence so if you are playing with sorcery and pyromancy those points in INT are not going to waste. Besides you can always just upgrade your Pyro catalyst to make your spells stronger and not have to gain any souls levels. The Pyro hand only requires souls to upgrade which is pretty sweet.

The key to the Capra is to kill those pesky dogs first. Every time you enter the fog the Capra makes a b-line for you and does his double sword attack. Roll out of the way and run up the stairs. The dogs will follow so take them out. The Capra will follow too and when he does jump off, let him jump off and get a few hits in. Make him chase you up the stairs, jump off and hit him as he lands again. Sometimes you can get a jumping attack in him but he usually is up those stairs pretty fast but you never know, he may get stuck and give you a chance.

My first game I must have died to that stupid Capra 10+ times, no joke.

Also, congrats on killing Ornstein lush, those guys are a real challenge but the lordvessel and being able to teleport between bonfires (not all of them unfortunately) makes it very much worth it.

I'm doing a melee hybrid. Thanks for the advice. I'm loving my character but just wanted stronger armor without it hurting my character build. I just got the Drake sword and love it Phone Post

Must have died 50+ times before finally getting him. I play a knight who hasn't dropped ANYTHING (waiting to get the bottomless box, so I can unload until I can get to "sell" my excess inventory). So I was a walking armory, slow as hell, trying to dodge getting boxed in. Fuck.

Thanks man. This is seriously one of the best games I've ever played. Demon's Souls was incredible and this has improved in every way. Some are saying they are having trouble finding people for co-op but that hasn't been the case for me. Just put down your soul sign often and near known spots like bonfires and you'll get summoned / find players.

So much to still do in this game. I'm making a VIT/END/STR build with just enough DEX to use the Dragon Hunting Bow, the thing shoots lances for arrows. Plus I want to wear Havel's gear and beat the hell out of everything with brute force.

i bought the game but havent opened it yet...still deciding whether or not to return it. how does saving work in the game? i really like challenging games, but the idea of playing for 3 hours and then dying and having to re-do everything is not that appealing to me.

The game autosaves quite frequently. And if you "quit game" through the start menu it'll save your game from the exact spot you left off.

Dying only means loading the souls you've collected....and you can always go back to the spot you died and pick them up. Unless you die again before you get there... Phone Post
