Why do they deploy to war? Everytime I've encountered them in Iraq they are ate up. They don't go out into their sector, and just recently 10 died from a unit in Oklahoma alone. I'll throw aside my hate for the ng for a moment and focus on how fucked up I think the ng system is. Because the governor wants more money he send these guys out. Why? Be honest. The ng forces are not properly trained at all. 11% of the year if that is when they are trained. This is not sufficient. I think it sucks to lose people. Which is why I'm making this post. I say keep them in the state. They do not belong overseas. You guys have anything? Phone Post

i agree that they should stay stateside... the whole 82nd in New Orleans while i deployed to Iraq seemed kinda dumb.

as a member of the unit that the OK unit relieved, we as a whole have had one of the longest deployments (563 days, i believe?), as well as some an engagement where over 100 Tali were killed by 2 platoons.

but Iowa happens to be more deployed than most states, and in turn, prolly takes that stuff more seriously. i've doen 3 deplyments from '01 to '06, and most of my friends have done 4 in the past decade.

i have been surprised during mobilizations how few NG units train like their lives depend on it.... but i am also suprised by AD units that do the same thing. at least the Guard has an excuse...

as far as why the Guard deploys...blame it on the incomplete deactivation of the Reserves.

And as far as active duty being fucked up, I agree as well. I call them out on it as well. I just get pissed off seeing some fucktard wearing his acus to his kids soccer game and takes his top off. Trying to get recognition because he doesn't feel like a real soldier. I fixed that fucktard right up! Phone Post

Hey virux, I can tell you as somebody who was there with the 45th, you can basically look at anybody wearing the rank of E-6 and above. A shit ton of toxic leaders that did not need to be there. It was fucking pathetic at times.. The worst part was losing LT Ewy, that man had his shit together and because of some stupid fucks in a TOC in Gardez, he isn't here anymore... I could go on and on, but I'll refrain.

And bushmaster, which COP were you at? I met a lot of great guys from Iowa that we relieved at dand patan. Phone Post

The higher leadership is crap. We had our towers to guard against an "attack" in siani. The great leadership decided to remove all the plexi glass so we could see better. Then we had sandstorms. They issued a pair of goggles to fix that. The major that decided no glass visited a tower once. He walked up and inspected the ammo in one tower. Every bullet had his name on it. He asked the private what he thought about that. The private replied," I think I need more ammo, sir, these all belong to you." Phone Post

machinegunman -  My opinion of the NG is that they should stay in America also. Most are far from being in shape, have no discipline or bearing, can't tacticly communicate, and are all around just slobs. I remember being at 29 stumps with a NG Artillery. They were always doing something ignorant...shooting out, getting lost, laying the howitzers incorrectly. Hell, once a howitzer shot a check round and it landed behind us! We were not happy campers lets just say. I get that this is what training is for, but once the unit starts to catch on, they're done with their 2 weeks and mentally lose what little they gained. They should just stick to disaster response, passing out MRE's, etc. Phone Post

no offence, but that's kind of an ignorant generalization....

i've deployed 3 times in the Guard, and most of my friends 4 times, and we've never had discipline issues that most AD units had. i was always fortunate to be in units that generally outperformed our counterparts, and managed to do some pretty historically significant things. i will admit that not all Guard/Reserve units are consistent in their readniness, though...

HOWEVER, i feel that the Guard should be protecting their states and nation, not tromping around the middle east.

its not the soldiers nor their company commanders or first sergeants to blame for their lack of skills! they rarely train to standard but their big birds cant say no to try and look good standing up for that call of duty! Phone Post

We have a new place to hang. Pm me and I'll give you the site. Also, it is the companies.

There are some high speed NGs. But most of them are fat and out of shape. I do agree with your colonels wanting to look good, but that's every colonel. Phone Post

i was talking to a guy at drill this weekend, and even though we had deployed different times, we had similar frustrations with our MOB process. he and i both found we were successful due to our own training, and not counting on the typical "check the box" stuff...

so i guess it all comes back to small unit leadership, or lack thereof.

Im in the NG now. I agree that it is filled with out of shape shitbags that don't know a fucking thing. The Guard needs an overhaul on training requirements.

But some, very few, of NG soldiers are very valuable and do know their shit. Phone Post

The leadership is the NG sucks. When I got in I couldn't be promoted because all the slots where occupied by guys who couldn't pass pt tests. When we got mobed they promoted all these fat bastards and screwed over everyone who was deserving. Then all the full timers got medical discharges and didn't go. When we got to Iraq they took the twenty percent if us who were competent any attached us to reg army units. The rest manned gaurd towers on base so the regulars wouldn't have to. The officers in charge of the towers (who never left the base) took all the armored vehicles and good gear. Luckily us guys who had to run around in Baghdad mooched weapons gear vehicles and AMMO from other agencies. We had some good soldiers who did good things overseas. I had good friends who were great soldiers die in Baghdad. The problem was 80 % of my unit had no business being in the gaurd to start with. Phone Post 3.0

lol @ the Guard never going outside the wire. That statement couldn't be more wrong. A National Guard brigade out of Idaho/Montana ran the ENTIRE Kirkuk/Kurdistan area back in '04/'05. They trained all the green horn 101st units that relieved them. Y'all need to stop acting like active duty infantry is somehow superior. Phone Post 3.0

But, the PT regs ARE corrupted. Fat fucks pencil whipping their fat fuck buddies so that they can be promoted. Fat fucks getting on walking profiles so that they can get promoted. I saw a guy from the Georgia Guard over in Iraq whose neck was as big around as his head. Phone Post 3.0

Several of the guys in my unit went to afganistan and continued to good good work. However my unit had dozens of guys who couldn't do 1 sit-up and couldn't fit in bdu's. Seriously could button up a bdu top. If my battalion had been deployed to afganistan on its own the whole unit would have been wiped out. Phone Post 3.0
