Nick Diaz camp issues five-round UFC 137 main event challenge to B.J. Penn

Diaz-white_medium
Nick Diaz is right back where he started ... in the UFC 137 main event.

Sure, the opponent, B.J. Penn, isn't the same as Georges St. Pierre. And the former Strikeforce welterweight champion won't attempt to unify the two belts. But one thing the Stockton, Calif.,-bred fighter wants to remain the same is the duration of the fight.

With news breaking today that St. Pierre was forced out of the pay-per-view (PPV) event with a knee injury, and that Carlos Condit -- who was inserted into the top slot after Diaz flaked several times on his promotional obligations -- will wait for "Rush" to recover, Cesar Gracie has a bright idea that could help soften the massive blow to the fight card:

Make the new main event, B.J. Penn vs. Nick Diaz, a five-round fight.

In fact, Gracie, who is Diaz's long time trainer and mentor, has already informed UFC President Dana White that his boy is down to bang for 25 minutes. In addition, he encourages "The Prodigy" to do the same, telling him, "Don't be scared, homie. Let's make it five rounds."

More from Gracie (via MMAFighting.com) after the jump:
Star-divide

"If they can't fight five rounds against each other, how are they going to fight five rounds against GSP?... Dana is good with it. We've agreed to it. If BJ agrees to it, we'll make it happen.... These guys have to prove they are ready. These guys are fighters. BJ has always said he's a warrior. ... The old school days of MMA, back when it was NHB, they fought forever."

No word yet on whether or not Penn, a former two-division champion who has prepared for several five-round fights throughout his illustrious career, has and/or will accept the challenge.

White, for his part, is not pushing the issue with UFC 137, which will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, less than two weeks away (Oct. 29, 2011). He is quoted as saying the neither man should be forced two fight for potentially 10 extra minutes because, "they haven't trained for five rounds."

Why does BJ have to agree to it? I thought DFW said that all main events are now 5 rounds going forward?

I think BJ will agree anyhow, he's not going to tuck.

They are both subject to the same 5 rounds, why are you crybabies making a big deal out of it? BJ just went 5 rounds in both Edgar fights AND the biggest damning point to your lame excuse making factory is he finished Diego in the 5th round.

He's a world class athlete, has PROVEN he can go 5, has proven he can finish someone in the fifth, and according to you losers was going to KO Diaz in one or two rounds.

FACT: you guys just want to have an excuse if BJ loses in the 4th, 5th or it goes to a decision.

Dishonest cowards, the whole lot of you.

I really seriously doubt this will happen, and he has absolutely no reason to take it, but how great would it be to see Penn accept this challenge. It would add a little fire to the fight and also make the fans happy.

Jason Parillo just told me he'll put through extra round of sparring tonight to gauge his fitness. They're open to 5 rounds.

I can't believe this would even be an issue. Cardio should be the least of any top level athlete's concerns.

LOL I see no reason for BJ to do this just to appease people like you. He is at a point in his career where every fight is important and he can't afford to lose anymore fights.

If he loses the fight because of conditioning in the latter rounds, the circumstances of taking a 5 rounder late won't matter. The loss still stands.

If BJ fans wanted to have an excuse in case he loses, we would all be saying make it 5 Rounds so if he does have a conditioning issue, then we can use it as the reason for losing.

Appease people like me? I've read quite a few posts from BJ fans, saying they would welcome 5 rounds. One guy even said he was a nuthugger and he's OK with it. Only people like YOU want to have a few excuses in the bank, just in case your deity loses.

He went 5 with Edgar twice. He went 5 with Diego and then TKOed him. He's a world class athlete, been training and competing regularly, has proven he can finish in any round, is supposed to be one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport, and belongs on the PFP list yet you guys are crying over 10 more minutes in a fight you guys have been saying for WEEKS that he will finish in one or two rounds.

FACT: it's an excuse by his nuthuggers....not his fans, but his deluded nuthuggers.

Shows what kind of faith his nuthuggers have in him. They were gearing up their excuses and defending him. He's clearly a tougher, more in shape badass than they give him credit for.
