Lloyd Irvin woke up in the pre-dawn hours of October 4, 2008 to find two armed men had broken into his suburban Maryland home. They instructed him to get up and join them as they rounded up the home's other occupants, which included Irvin's wife and four year old son, as well as Brandon Vera, who was staying with Irvin while he did his training camp at Irvin's gym.

While one of the men held Vera and Irvin's family at gunpoint, the other led Irvin into a back bedroom. That's when Irvin saw his opening and took it, grabbing for the gun, ejecting the ammunition clip, and wrestling the weapon away from the gunman. Disarmed, the man shouted out a warning to his accomplice and they both fled the house, leaving Irvin, his family, and Vera all unharmed, but badly shaken.

"After that, I don't think MMA was number one in my life anymore," said Vera. "After that home invasion, I was like, hey, I could have been dead today, and there's still so much I want to do. There's so much I want to experience, so much I want to do with my wife. MMA just wasn't the number one priority in my life anymore. Without me knowing, my life rearranged itself."

"I did some really crazy stuff at the house for home protection ... For a while I had a protection company follow my wife around. It was crazy times."

Vera lost a split decision to Keith Jardine, then won two straight, before dropping fights to Randy Couture, Jon Jones, and Thiago Silva, and getting cut by the UFC.

That's when he knew he'd lost "it."

"People keep asking me what "it" is," Vera said. "But if you've never lost "it" there's no way I can explain what "it" is."

Vera embarked on a road trip, teaching seminars at gyms across the USA. "Somewhere along those 8,500 miles is where I found it again."

Police arrested a suspect in the home invasion case that they believed was linked to multiple murders in similar situations -- a man the local police chief deemed a "serial killer" -- who will now spend the rest of his life in prison following sentencing.

Three months after the Silva loss, the NSAC changed the result to "No Contest" following Silva's blood test anomaly, and admission to PED use. The UFC welcomed Vera back, to face Eliot Marshall at UFC 137 in Las Vegas Saturday night.

"It's not a new chapter; it's a whole new book," said Vera. "The path I was on before, I don't know where I was going or where I got lost. Somewhere I made a left when I should have made a right. I don't know, but I lost it, and now I've found it."

I really hope so.  Vera has the tools to compete at the UFC level he just seems to be in a rut.  I can't imagine what an experience like that armed home invasion would do to a person (especially after you find out that the dude was most likely going to actually kill you not just rob you).  Gotta be a pretty life-changing experience.

I like Marshall but I hope Vera pulls the win on Saturday.

It's sadly humorous that many on the UG speculated that the home invasion was a ploy cooked up by Lloyd Irvin for publicity purposes. The guy has not received his full hero's due here, imo.

JustSaying -  Held at gunpoint by alleged murderers.  I can't even fathom what that would feel like.  Your wife and kids are all at the mercy of a ruthless killer.  I'm glad it turned out okay.

I have a daughter and I couldn't even imagine what would be going through my head. But, I guess this fool picked the wrong house.

This. Not really a fan, but he showed glimmers of greatness in the past, and it would be good for the sport if he's got it back together.

I am unconvinced that his blah performances had anything to do with the home invasion. Thiago is a tough fight (especially with the GnP gameplan he utilized) for anyone, roids or no. Randy basically won a gift decision. Jon Jones will beat him every time they fight, no matter how motivated he is. I don't think Vera has the tools to beat the top guys. He was already sliding into a pattern of losses before the invasion. Aside from a fat, unmotivated Frank Mir he hasn't beaten anyone great in the UFC.

Ironically, the song 'Scars' is about similar situations....

In an interview, Felix Buxton stated that the album Scars were all the things that the band had been through emotionally and physically. Felix told Rolling Stone Australia they named the album 'Scars' after he was mugged for his bicycle in BrixtonLondon in 2008. He revealed: "I wasn't badly hurt but it scared me. It's probably one of the scariest moments of my life. Scars are the things that stay with you and that incident definitely gave me one.

Crazy, I remember hearing about it but didn't know the whole story. Home invasion is some scary $hit and I probably would never leave my wife or kids alone if it happened to me.

Hope his mind is right now, always thought he had the skills. Seemed more of a mental part of the game he needed help with.

And props to Lloyd!!! Phone Post

Good for Lloyd that he got his CCW permit. Very fortunate it ended how it did.

not only that, but a lot of people (not just here) like to joke about Irvin BJJ belts and whatnot....

i liked brandon when he first popped up.... then came the lackluster performances and losses and excuses for not delivering on his promises etc..then i started to to get annoyed by him...

hearing about this story a 2nd time, after years have past, makes me realize the true extent of it's effects on everyone involved....

im hoping vera pulls this one off...marshall is one tough sob

I couldn't agree with you more sir. It seemed so obvious that Randy lost that fight. Close? Sure but not a hard decision to make at all. I don't think you get to much fuss over it since (I'm assuming) people got who they wanted to win.

I like both fighters but man was that a wrong call. I know anytime I look at those 2 mens record I swap the wins around. ;)
