Thiago Alves had a tough start in MMA, losing his first two pro fights, back in 2001. In time, he put together a ferocious seven-fight win streak, that earned him an ultimately failed shot at SGP's welterweight title. In his three fights since, his sole win was over John Howard, who is no longer with the organization.

That's the bad news. The good news is that in Papy Abedi 'Pit Bull' has an opponent who will likely stand and trade, and that should result in a win for Alves. But if he doesn't - and in this sport anything can happen which is why you have the fight - could UFC 138 see Alves leaving the UFC?

More likely candidates for the cut list include:

Eddie Faaloloto (2-2, 0-1 UFC)
(vs. Terry Etim)
Faaloloto is winless under the Zuffa banner, having dropped back-to-back fights to Anthony Njokuani in the WEC and then Michael Johnson in the UFC. Now he has to fight in a Brit in Britain.

Anthony Perosh (11-6, 1-3 UFC)
(vs. Cyrille Diabate)
After an 0-2 bid back in 2006, the Aussie got back on the books by stepping up to fight Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic on short notice in Sydney. That didn't go well, but he rebounded with his first UFC win thanks to a submission over Tom Blackledge, and against Diabate he even gets to fight someone his own age.

Michihiro Omigawa (12-10-1, 0-4 UFC)
(vs. Jason Young)
If he loses he's almost guaranteed to find himself out of a job, but this is a very winnable fight for Omigawa. The UFC would no doubt love to see him stick around long enough to help out with its Japanese invasion in 2012.

Doubt he'd be cut. Hardy stuck around after losing 4 straight and alves is just as exciting. Phone Post

I love Alves and while I believe he can still be maybe top 5, I dont think he will be the same beast after his injury/surgery/layoff. IMO, the Alves that fought for the title and smashed Karo/Hughes would have beaten Fitch or at least had a super competitive bout.

His leg kicks are still one of the best in the sport but its obvious he's fallen a few steps back. The significant thing here IMO is that it shows how easily a fighter can be hindered by injuries and how fast the game keeps moving at the same time. Alves was considered a legit threat to GSP's title not long ago and rightfully so. Now, he's not even in contention. He is a product of the UFC and a product of one of the US's top gyms in ATT.

IMO, his fall behind has been similar to JZ's who is from the same gym and also had his share of injury/surgery/layoffs. Granted JZ never fought for the UFC, he was still no doubt one of the top LWs in his prime. Of course, people paint JZ's lack of success of late as further proof that JMMA was all a sham.

Anyhow, I hope Alves can find his form again. He did look good against Howard. He was able to stuff Kos' tds, and get back up from GSP's. He has the skills and power but it will remain to be seen if he can bring his top game back enough to today's WW div.

LOL there is zero chance of Alves getting cut. Even if he misses weight they will just make him move up to MW

PS fuck the cunt who wrote this article. "Chances of getting cut: Very good." Just fuck you man, hope you get hurt today

Gsp didn't beat him that bad. I'd say it's more the year layoff he had after Gsp, the brain surgery, the thumb surgery and knee surgery.  Even through all that his last fight was a toss up with a top 8 fighter. Alves is just a little bit off. He just needs to get a win and move on from there.

I have never seen Pitbull in the kind of shape he is in for this fight. As far as I know he has been walking around much leaner and doesnt even have to cut much to be on point

Alves sure as shit isn't getting cut and can destroy 90% of that division.. His problem has been wrestling and ATT's resistance to adding it to their repertoire.. Although better late than never, they did end up recruiting a ton of world class wrestlers such as Vila, Bubba Jenkins and I think Yoel Romero is there full time also.. He should be back to top 5 within 4 months Phone Post

I'm sure the UFC will be eager to get rid of the top ranked Brazilian in the welterweight division, especially now that UFC has become so popular in Brazil

Not sure why so many fans and "journalists" are infatuated with speculation regarding fighters getting cut, who's fighting for their job, etc. But it's pretty fuckin lame and doesn't help anything. Phone Post
