As nutritionist Mike Dolce told MMA Fighting from England on Friday afternoon, Alves had no trouble making the 171-pound limit on his second try, and would have made it the first time except for a calibration issue.

"We had four different scales," Dolce said. "Every scale had him between [1]69 [pounds] and [1]71 [pounds]. We were happy. It was an easy weight cut, he felt fine, high energy, bouncing around. We got to the weigh-ins and he was [1]72.3 [pounds] with his shorts on. He took off his shorts and he was [1]72 [pounds] on the dot. We were shocked, but hey, no problem. We walked off the scale, we went backstage, there was a sauna there, he sat in the sauna for a few minutes, then he took a pee, then we went back out and made 171 [pounds]. It was literally that simple."

What's not so simple, according to Dolce, was dealing with the public backlash that he saw on Twitter once news got out that Alves was over. Though Alves made weight "maybe 40 minutes later," according to Dolce, by then the story of his initial miss was out and MMA fans seemed to have made up their minds about him.

He made weight the second time. Differences in calibration are the reason they give them another opportunity. Whats's the big deal? Either there is weight cutting or there is not. If there is, he played within the rules.

If the scale was out how come everyone else made weight? Personally I don't think being a pound or two out is that big a deal but don't make up stupid excuses. Phone Post

Yeah it's sad how almost everyone on this board jumped all over Alves when this shit (scale calibration) happens all the time. The man made weight easily, and was in the best shape he has ever been in cutting the weight.

People so quick to judge.

Well, if we do the math they would have been about a pound under.

He is not necessarily saying that the official scale was off, rather that the scales THEY were using backstage all said he was good....it could have been the official one, or the ones they used, but it is easy for scales to have variences of a pound. It is not a perfect system.

There is no need for excuses as he shed the pound well within the allowed time. Nothing wrong, nothing to be bitching about or shitting on Alves for.

What horrible luck.

The scale is fine for everyone else, but as soon as Thiago steps on it, it malfunctions. Phone Post

Also another REALLY shitty thread title from the UG. It's like they warp them as much as possible so the idiots who don't actually read the quotes will assume that Dolce really said what the title reads. Shockingly Dolce didn't say what is in the title.....

It's like the UG writters love to stir the pot and make us argue or something :-)

Non-issue???

Maybe if missing weight wasn't an issue of his in the past.

It's absolutely an issue worth mentioning when the Pitbull misses weight yet again.

Whether he hit weight later or not is irrelevant. He still missed when he's had a habit of not making weight.

I think a fighter should have a limited amount of times they can miss weight. Miss weight again, and you should be forced up to the next division.

A fighter missing weight is very unprofessional! Phone Post

uhh...theirs a problem with your post in the fact that he DID make weight...

It took him an extra 40 minutes, which is no problem with regards to the rules.

Plus, it's not like he couldn't lose the weight, he didn't come in 5-10 lbs heavy with a no mas attitude. He came in a pound heavy unexpectedly.

Humans make mistakes, get over it.

Agreed. 1 lb difference is different than 5-10 lbs.

So he made weight 40 minutes later, and you think it's a non-issue considering the fact it's Thiago Alves?

I just think after you truly miss weight multiple times, you should come in at weight 1st time, every time when you decide to stay in that division.

I guess it's also a non-issue for him to use the allotted "extra" time every time he weighs in as well then.

I'd say small issue, but not a non-issue. Phone Post

This is a classic example of a REASON and not an EXCUSE.

Alves made weight fine but we still have hoards of people making ridiculous comments.

The scale that everyone else used wasn't a problem....the scale Alves used to check his weight before he weighed in is the problem from what I read, which is why he came in a pound heavy.  He made the weight.  End of story.

scales vary. he made weight within the hr. no professional fighter chooses not to make weight than cuts it within an hr of weigh ins. The obviously thought they made weight then fixed the problem asap when they didnt. ease up or fuck off

do you guys think there needs to be a challenge scale? typically in wrestling there is one extra scale, usually thought to be on the "lower" side. if a wrestler misses weight on the official scale, they let him give it a try on the challenge scale.
