I've been thinking about giving it a go as a career, but I don't think I'm quite ready yet, and not really ready to give up my real world stuff yet either. Very interested in how you do and good luck man!

If you're married, I'd give it some serious, serious thought. It's a really tough line of work. No real sense of security--perhaps until you're rolled for really big games. Phone Post

Not married and nothing is really tying me down. If poker becomes legal in the us again then I would seriously consider traveling the world and playing online to pay for it. Just a pipe dream though.

I've worked in a poker room for about 8 1/2 years and i know of 2 or 3 guys who have taken to full time play and made it work.  Most that try need to go back to work after a year or 2.

and you need to be in a place that has a good amount of tourists or multiple casinos

florida, vegas, ac, southern ontario seem to be the most fertile areas

good luck Vector

Was bankroll management their main downfall, or were they not as good as they thought they were?

What are the common mistakes you saw people make when trying to go pro? Phone Post

andre - Vector! Update?

No update really.  Like I said, I'm playing very little this month and thus far have played less than I thought I would.  The little I have played though I have played and run well so that's good.  My plan is still to get everything else in my life in order (great progress has been made there), read some poker books, then step up the hours in January as there is a WSOP event in the area and I heard the cash games get pretty good then.

Thanks.  There are 2 casinos near me.  One has a very large poker room (70 tables).  If it does work out, then I don't plan on staying here for the longterm as the biggest game at my casino is 5-10 (and that is generally just 1 or 2 tables).

It looks like there will be a couple of mega-resort casinos built in Miami.  If there are good poker rooms at those casinos then that would be a place I would like to live.  Otherwise, Vegas.  Right now I'm just focused on taking steps to make sure I can beat 2/5 over the longrun :-)

I don't really know true bankrolls most guys have, but as you can usually tell when someone is playing with money they can't lose I suspect management is the main culprit.

Getting caught up in the gambling/party lifestyle seems to get guys to overstep their limits.  Guys will start to hang out with true high rollers, mistake themselves for one, and end up taking a hit at the craps/ blackjack tables.  The rollers usually have succesful businesses to bankroll them so they can take these hits no problem.

Leaving. When you're playing with the same group of people it's hard to just hit and run.  You can get away with it once in awhile but the're gonna stop giving you action if it becomes a normal behavior. On another note If you're still chasing 18 hours in you're generally doing more harm than good.

These are just a couple generalizations of what i've seen.

IMO being a live pro is a harder gig than most jobs, If I was to try live off poker it would have to be online.

Good luck man, something most of us serious players would like to do someday, even grinding for $20/hr would be a dream come true for me personally. Some day.

Until then, I'll keep living vicariously through guys like you and Andre

Thanks.  Been doing pretty well this week.  As long as I'm playing my 'A' game I do well in these games.  The WSOP Circuit event starts at Choctaw (a casino north of Dallas) tomorrow.  As of right now I think I'll just play cash games there, rather than any of the tournaments. I would like to play a 6-max event but I'm not sure I really have a big enough edge to justify the investment.  Online I would be quite confident but the live game is way different and it seems likely that I would bleed through chips quite quickly playing my normal 6-max game.

If any of ya'll are from the Dallas area or Oklahoma you should come out and play at Choctaw between January 12th and 22nd.  There should be a lot of good action.

Wega if you are decent at 6-max online, you will crush a 6-max live tourney, huge edge guaranteed.

Well I ended up not playing that 6-max tourney. I've actually only played 1 tournament and it was a small $200 buy in tournament at Chad Brown's tournament series at Choctaw. I lost some big pots early to a "loose cannon" in the first orbit (before anyone knew how crazy he was..he was knocked out shortly after). Then I nursed a short stack for quite some time before finally getting it in KK vs AA vs JJ with 15 big blinds left (JJ won of course).

I do wanna play some satellites and mega-satellites during Winstar's River Poker Series and then some events if I do well in the satellites.

In regards to poker, it has been going well. I played 5/10 for about a month and a half but the swings are too big for me and I really need to improve as a player before I play 5/10 full time. I've been playing mainly just 2/5 the past 3 months and have been killing it at a much higher rate than I was previously.

Awesome, Vector! That's so great!

Does the $5/$10 in your area have a cap on the buy in? The one I played didnt, so it wasn't unusual to see $10k stacks. That was a GREAT game for a while, but after Black Friday it attracted some online pros that scared off the fish.

If you ever feel like going to LA for a poker run--best time is usually during a big tournament series at Commerce or The Bike--let me know. I'll point you in the direction of the best games. Phone Post

Buy in for 5/10 here is $500 to $2000. Winstar's River tournament series is about to kick off, so I expect 10/25 to be running quite often pretty soon. That is a 2k minimum with no cap on the buy in. I'm not rolled to play that high though.

Have you been building your roll, or have you had to use all of your profits to pay bills?

I rent out 3 rooms in my house so my living expenses are super low and my roll is growing.
