http://www.mmahq.com/blog/2011/11/07/thiago-alves-chasing-potential/

I learned a lot in my last fight with Rick Story. You never leave it up to the judges but I had such a good training camp that when it came to fight time I just wanted things to happen. I didn’t want to work.

I just wanted things to happen like a miracle; like I’d just throw a kick and he’d just hit his head on my leg or something like that and I learned that you’ve got to put in work in training but if you don’t perform when it matters then it’s all for nothing.

The dude is about as talented as anyone in the division, I'm sure he's capable of getting back into title contention rather easily.

I actually think he fades into gatekeeper status. Fitch, markham, macdonald, and ellenberger are all very bad match ups for him Phone Post

Alves has seemed to have had a rough learning curve for a man fighting as many years as he has - just goes to show how over-confidence in yourself can sometimes harm more than help.

I think he's still an elite fighter, but ALREADY I think the division has sorta passed him by as far as beating top 5 guys goes.

He seems a lot more focused now but, same as always, it'll be how he does against the grinding wrestlers he'll inevitably run into at welterweight.

I think he's just now starting to find his rhythm. We'll see some devastating fights from him in the next year against some legit competition.

Grinding wrestlers are tough at any weight.....what really sucks is that they don't really beat you or out class you.....they just hug their way to a decision.....sucks to see it happen.

Alves proved he can beat a top level wrestler when he beat Koscheck, although Kos may have wanted to get that fight to the ground instead of standing so much with him.

Alves was able to stop Kos taking him down, if he can replicate that and improve his TTD he's a nightmare for some of the wrestlers in this division.

Improving his TDD wont mean anything if he is always gun shy against GSP standing, fearing his takedown.

Agree. These guys would just try to pin against the cage, untill Alves gets hsi will broken, with the exception of Macdonald, who i think could out class Alves in every aspect.

Did he really just say that the lesson he learned from the story fight was to not leave it in the hands of the judges? Seriously? Phone Post

He needs to change his diet during his down time and try to see if he could fight at LW. Of course he can't seem to make weight easily at 170, but with dolce I think he could do it. Either way I'm still a fan. Like someone else said he would have trouble with Ellenberger and other wrestlers. Phone Post

That or the brain surgery, the layoff and stuff.
