Frens

I finally did it, I enlisted in the Army as a 68W combat medic. Not many people know yet so I wanted the OG to be the first to know. I leave for basic in april 2012.

Do we have any other medics here? I have some questions for someone who has done the job.

Congrats. I was a 68w/m6 (combat medic & practical nurse) for 11 years, just ets in january. I was a medic and practical nurse in the hospitals and in a combat support hospital in Iraq.

No offense, but did you look into the airforce, they also got medical techs?

Whats up Randy, long time no see. So your at BAMC now? You know my homie/training partner Pintor? Thats one of my old training partners, and friends and he got stationed there over a year ago. He went with the Ft. Sam team to the combatives tourny back in 2010.

What about Soto or Concepcion? They were stationed at Walter Reed a couple of years back, I think when you were there.

Do you guys have a school house at Ft. Sam now?

I'm still here in Hawaii, got out in jan and just training down at 808Topteam (formely fight factory) and going to school full-time.

I'm not at BAMC, I'm at the School side. I met Pintor and trained with him. Don't know Soto or Concepcion. Yeah we got a fight house and the programs great.

Take it easy

What do to you do on a daily basis when in garrison ?

While Deployed?

I'm hoping to get put as a line medic with a cav scout unit.

How is it decided if u are a line medic or a hospital medic? Phone Post

You have to ask your recruiter. If you are a highspeed dep he shouldnt have a problem in trying to get it in your contract. You might have to Reno(renegotiate) your contract to get it. That means new basic date. Phone Post

Line or Hospital?
You just get picked from the Dept of Army to go wherever. As far as hospitals, there are different ones. You can go to a MEDCEN. Those are the big ones you are probably thinking about where there's not too much getting in the dirt. The ER is the best place for training here if it's the high pace action (sometimes not as much) you want. Then there's the CSH (Combat Support Hospital or Cash) This is the little makeshift hospital closest to the troops on the line.
What's up with being in a CAV unit? That's the only line unit I haven't been too yet. Don't need to. Infantry!!!

What we do on a daily basis?
Take care of the Soldiers. Do sick call, keep their records updated, do medical training with section, give medical training to your unit. Train with your unit on their combat mission. Do all the Army stuff you may think is stupid.

While deployed?
All that and more fun and bullshit.

Here's my advice if you wanna do some "cool" stuff. Do your physical training and get a 300. Early preparation before basic training will get you there. When you get to AIT and do well, there are recruiters from the Ranger Regiment, Civil Affairs and other high speed units that need Combat Medics. But for now concentrate on the short term goal.

Hospital- Will work in the dept your assigned to, try to ask for ER for the best experience. Avoid the ward if you can. Only time you'll see the outside of the hospital is on police call, and medic training twice a year, and maybe the range.
CSH- Will be doing alot of training and doing a lot of inventory on the milvans, and putting up the field hospital to make sure your shit is good. You'll also be training up soldiers and getting them ready for deployment.

While Deployed?
While in the CSH you'll be taking care of casualities that are air-evac, or brought in by field ambulance. You'll see some tragic shit, but it's the best feeling knowing you've helped save a soldiers life.

How is it decided if u are a line medic or a hospital medic?
Depends on where the Army puts you, unless you have it in your contract where your going.

Also virus, how likely is it I could add airborne to my contract if I did not get it on the DEP contract?
When I went through A.I.T they were taking volunteers for airborne slots. Its guarenteed that you'll get stuck in an airborne unit, like Ft. Bragg.

Goodluck, you'll do fine.

It's not guaranteed that he will go to an airborne unit. If it's not in the contract they don't have to do it. It's shit like this that pisses me off. Why are you not talking to your recruiter about this? Do you guys not have a good relationship? Every one of my guys has asked me this. The ones that are good deps always had me fighting for them. If they showed up on time, checked in without me calling them, brought in referrals, and came to future soldier functions. As airborne can be attained at any point in your career it should not be a deal breaker. But instead of being on here I can give you my number or you should call your recruiter. You will find that a lot of military personnel think they know how it works(this was myself as well, before I was voluntold to be a recruiter.) recruiting is a different beast. Phone Post

Virus, I have been bugging my recruiter about getting airborne even before I went to meps. I hate to bad mouth him but he is one of those that like to do as little work as possible.

I talked to him today and he said he had looked into it and that they were only offering airborne to 91b. I just think he doesn't want to do the work. He gave me the speech of "once u get to ur unit keep asking for airborne".

I never received an orientation after DEPing, I'm supposed to do some classes and a pt test so I can one more rank before I ship but he hasn't even explained what I need to be doing.

Going above his head wouldn't do much good as his commander is also lazy. It took 2.5 months for me to go to meps after my initial visit to the RS, and I was easy, no criminal, drugs, 93 on asvab all line scores over 120. Had all my paperwork with me etc. I couldn't have made it easier for them.

I have been working on maxing out the APFT cos I heard that in AIT they take the people with the highest pt scores for airborne. But even then they only take about 10 out of 300.

Wish I would have had a recruiter that really cared, like you seem to do virus. Phone Post

I don't know anything about recruiting but I know if I think I'm hearing BS, I'll go find more info from somebody who has a clue. So contact Virus11B for better info.

True about your PT score. I had a graduating class where the top score was 375. There were about 20 more well over 325. Keep at it. Combatives is another way to stick out more over here. We offer Level I & II Combatives and we hold a Battalion and Brigade tournament. Doing well in them are some simple ways to stick out more in a positive way.

Here's a good site to improve your PT
