Meanwhile, in Pharr, Texas, a no-longer-imprisoned War Machine (formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver) earned a third-round TKO win over UFC and Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Roger Huerta in a welterweight main event at Ultimate Warrior Fighting 1.

With both fighters competing for the first time in 2011, War Machine and Huerta engaged in a back-and-forth affair. But in the third and final frame, Huerta escaped a few submission attempts before finding himself pinned under War Machine and desperately hoping to avoid the heavy punches coming from the top. His defense was ruled inadequate, and the fight was waved off.

Man what the hell happened to Huerta? He seemed to be on the quick path for a UFC title just a few years ago. Phone Post

Say what you may about the person War Machine is, but he has always put everything into his fights.

Yeah, he was one fight away from fighting Penn for the title and showed a ton of heart in his fight with Maynard. And now he's lost to War Machine?

I haven't seen the fight yet, but I would've thought all that MT training he's been doing in Thailand would've really sharpened up his standup.

So was his departure from the UFC primarily from going off about fighter pay? Or was there more? His losses in the cage didn't seem to warrant the cut.

From Huerta's facebook:

"Hey guys, thx again for the messages. So Yeah, left the hospital earlier this morning and it's a broken rib. Happened in the scramble when I ended up in half guard late in the 3rd round. Thought I could hold him there but it was to painful. I should of called it off there but I guess my stubbornness in not calling it got the best of me. sorry guys...
You know, I'm not sure what's going on...I was winning this fight till the rib broke(or at least I felt this). It wasn't like he punched it and broke it. It just gave out and I couldn't breath. Weirdest thing. My hats off to him though. It was a good fight all in all. But again thank you guys deeply for the nice messages and for your support. Hope you guys enjoyed the fight either way"

That was at lightweight, and if I'm not mistaken War Machine is a pretty large welterweight.

Yeah, I don't think Huerta's big enough for strong 170lbers like WM.

 How the mighty have fallen.

From going 6-0 in UFC, on a verge of a title shot and on SI covers, stopping Guida in an amazing war of a fight...

... to talking trash about UFC and getting frozen out, losing two in a row and his UFC contract.   Losing in Bellator.  And now losing to fresh out of jail War Machine on a small card.

What happened to this guy?

I don't understand why he was cut from the ufc.. He was 6-2 and was only on a 2 fight losing streak against Florian and Maynard of all guys, two top dogs. I use to love watching the guy.
Did Dana not like him or something? Phone Post

Was this fight at Welterweight? I think Huerta should stick to lightweight. He is a very capable fighter, but I think War Machine might have been too big for him. He's a strong fella, and very wild.

Solid win for War Machine. Huerta needs to fix up his career.

He wasnt cut. His contract ended after the Maynard fight, and originally he was planning on going into acting after he finished his contract, and leaving fighting behind. He then said the Maynard fight reinspired him, but that he was a free agent who would sign with the top bidder....Bellator was willing to pay/market him more than the UFC was, in hopes of a superfight/tournament final between him and Alvarez Phone Post
