 descartes and extension...i understand that he belives extension is the essence of matter and essentially the body but he really holds that close to him. really my question is why does Descartes claim that extension is the essence of body? how does he argue for this claim? why is this claim important to him, i cant quite figure out where to find the answer and why it is true...PLEASE HELP!

I think because by extension, humans have choice and freedom, which moves them beyond essence (which is purely animal), and that we must constantly choose between being and doing, we can never be both at the same time.  Descartes wanted us to be what we are while remaining aware of ourselves, this is the "being" and the "awareness", which lead to Sartre's argument of "being" and "nothingness".  But I think Descartes meant the extension to be the self-awareness.  Don't know if that helps, I tried :)
