"A few months ago I was on top of the world and I'm now I'm in a downfall," St-Pierre said. "But you recognize a champion from how he comes back from things that don't go well. Everybody that says bad things and says bad stuff about me right now, mark my words. I'm going to tell you right now, I'm in a downfall in my life, but in a few months, I'll be back stronger than ever, and I will be champion again. I promise."

St-Pierre said on Wednesday that he hurt himself while wrestling. He heard a crack and felt pain but tried to continue. However, consistent instability in his right leg led him to believe something more severe than originally thought. He eventually visited his orthopedist, Dr. Sebastien Simard, and an MRI showed a complete tear of his ACL as well as a smaller tear in his meniscus.

St-Pierre said he believed that overcompensating for that injury with his healthy leg may have led to more problems.

"I believe there is only one person to blame for what happened and it's myself," he said. "I'm the kind of guy, I endure pain and go through it. I learned a big lesson in my life. It's going to make me stronger, smarter and more clever."

nothing weird. in mma non-contact and contact acl injuries are so common. what most likely happened is he suffered a partial tear and continued to train resulting in a complete tear.

hopefully he gets back to full fitness, but being a champion and getting this type if injury is not good. you almost always come back having lost a step.

both shogun and cain were champions that had to come back from a long lay off and a bad injury with shoguns being an acl and they both lost their titles.

Why is he saying "I will be champion again"? It's not like they stripped him of the title. He's still the champion.

Yeah I think it's funny to see everyone shitting on GSP.

I'm not a diaz hater... I like diaz.. not his actions but he's an exciting figure and amazing fighter.

Regardless... everyone is shitting on GSP and saying diaz is gonna smash him. Diaz won't be able to beat GSP now... then or ever in the future.

GSP by domination.

i guess he may feel if he can't go in there and defend the championship and compete than he isn't champion.

GSPtruefan - This might be good for gsp as he'll have a long time off training to develop as a person, study and train his mind as he is a bit mentally weak. He can also have more English lessons and even acting lessons which would be good as he could go to Hollywood! Phone Post
Disagree on mentally weak, he has steamrolled through a who's-who of WW's. He's taken limps and kept coming forward. Warrior IMO. Phone Post

Yep, this is pretty common. I blew my knee out at my first gi BJJ class and I tried to continue grappling, since the pain was endurable. I only stopped after my training partner thought it was bad to continue if my knee kept buckling.

Later on the MRI showed a complete tear of the ACL.

GSP will be back. I went back to judo at 5 months post-op and it wasn't too bad. IIRC Joe Lauzon had the same injury + surgery and had a successful return.

It's not just the ACL, there is a meniscus tear too. I can't comment on the ACL but the meniscus tear while not painful is a bitch to deal with in athletics because it causes your knee to lock up in weird positions at inopportune times.

Is it just me or is GSP's English actually getting worse?  Hurry up and get better before we have to listen to more drivel from prison yard in NoCal.

It sucks but age gets everyone. GSP is in his 30's now, and is not 22 anymore. He should have taken it easier after his smaller injury. With his schedule though this may not have been possible though.

Hopefully he comes back stronger and hungrier than he was.

I have the feeling he's going to get stripped. I think he realizes that it's going to be a really long time between his next fight. Best case probably 1.5 years since his fight with Shields.

ACL injuries are horrible.  Hopefully he comes back close to how he was.  It's all about the rehab...if he rehabs it right, he should be fine.

I think everyone is forgetting the fact english isn't his first language. I'm pretty sure he means "back in champion form" or something to the extent, not literally back to being the champion.

Stripping the title wouldn't make sense. He's out because of injury, not because of any contract dispute or him refusing to fight people. There is a timeline for his return, it's not up in the air. Making anyone else champion at this moment wouldn't be any different than having an interim champion, so why deal with all the bullshit?

The UFC does not strip because of contract dispute, (Randy) they strip because you cannot defend the belt in a timely fashion, (Mir).  This is exactly the type of situation where the champion should be stripped.  It would actually benefit Georges as he can take his time and heal up properly as well as take a tune up fight once he comes back.  Then he could get his title shot and have th ebest possible shot at being at his best.  What sense does it make to have a belt holder not defending for between 1.5  and 2 years?  And there's no shame in being stripped, he cannot defend the title.  It's not like he refused to defend the belt, (well I guess he did against Condit) but that's besides the point.

I can see arguments for both sides, but personally I am with SinCityHustler. And now that I've read his post, I agree that it'd actually benefit GSP if he forfeits it.

What's your take on Diaz/Condit btw?

You don't see the difference between this situation and the Mir situation? That's sad because I pointed it out.

It will be 10 months before he can fight. 10 months since everyone learned he would not be able to fight, a year if you count Diaz.

You see the difference?

No one knew when/if Mir would return because he had a broken femur.

GSP has a torn ACL.

There I spread it out nicely for you. Phone Post
