Are you running other software when this problem happens? Did you check to see if you have the latest video drivers? Is there a specific website these videos are from?

no software running. not sure i have the latest drivers, but if it plays fine after each restart, i dont think its a driver issue. its any video type, flv, wmv, mp4.... not anything from a specific website. thanks

Its not unheard of to have bad drivers that cause issues that can be remedied with a restart. I would check to see if there is newer drivers for both your motherboard and the video card.

Try downloading a Codec pack or using DivX player?

VLC has about every codec you need uninstall VLC player, and reinstall

Is your source an online stream or is the video on your local PC / Network
If streaming is there a specific site your streaming from when you get this issue or is it random sites ?

From the menu > Tools > Preferences > Video > Output > switched to 'Windows GDI video output' > Save.

if you're talking about movies or shows you downloaded through the internet, your media player might not have the encoder to play the sound byte.

Download Gom player.

Try to move those files onto another HD. Then try playing it there. Same issue? Might be corrupted files.

same deal on another hd.
when ALL vids wont play on any player (just sound), my adobe premiere wont open, nor will my windows movie maker. it says something about my video card. and as always: these same videos all play fine once i restart.

How old is your video card? Might be time to change it out if it keeps happening and is fine when you restart.

I agree. Sounds like your video card. Unless you have another computer you want to test the files on. If there is no problem with files then it's the VLC or hardware issue. But you already uninstalled and reinstalled VLC. So what left is the video card or files.

think my video card heats up too much, and a restart cools it down enough to work? wonder if putting in another fan might work

Well that would be a good start. In the mean time you are frying your machine with the heat and increase in resistance that the heat causes. You could try running it with the case open and see what happens, that's a good way to ghetto cool the machine. Open case and a big house fan blowing on it.

 adobe premiere question

recently exporting media has started to take much longer than usual. like 20 minutes for a 5 minute clip. no matter which format i use for a source, or which i save as. it didnt used to take so long. windows movie maker does the same process very quickly, still. i really dont get it. and i didnt set it to do some extra super high quality stuff either.
thanks
