“I believe in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, I accomplished everything I wanted,” Gonzaga, 32, explained to Bleacher Report. “I won state, national, and world-championship titles. In MMA, I had the opportunity to fight 12 times so far for the UFC. I fought for the UFC heavyweight title, and against some of the best fighters in the sport.”

Gonzaga’s retirement from mixed martial arts would ultimately prove to be short-lived.

“I believe I was looking for some time to reset my goals,” offered Gonzaga. “I enjoyed the chance to stay close to my students, and also the extra time I was able to spend with my family...My students and my friends were asking to see me fight again.”

Although Gonzaga insisted that he is taking a pragmatic approach to his return, the former heavyweight title contender is nevertheless hoping to make the most of his return to the canvas.

“I take one fight at a time,” offered Gonzaga, who will be contesting the first match of his new four-fight contract with the UFC on Saturday. “I just want to focus on this fight right now.

“I want to be a world champion...I want to be recognized as a guy that comes to fight win or lose, and puts on a good show for the fans.”

I am a fan of Gonzaga. He was looking a little fluffy around the edges in his last few fights. Here's to hoping he's improved his cardio and commitment to being in better shape. I am a little worried because the HW division is so much tougher now. I think he might be able to make a little noise in the division with the right matchups.

Huge fan of GG, we'll know come weigh in how serious he took things. If he is over 245 it's a really bad sign.

I came in to Gonzaga's camp to spar and help him get ready. He had a great camp while I was there and he can submit any HW if it goes there. I think he's gonna do well. Phone Post

Gonzaga is among the top jiu jitsu guys in MMA and arguably with few equals in that regard in the current UFC HW division. If he focuses on his strengths, I certainly believe he could earn himself matches against top 5-10 UFC heavyweights. I cannot say for certain if he would win or lose with the ever improving competition, but I'll never count Gonzaga out. Especially if he develops solid gameplans. I'm looking forward to his upcoming fight. I really do hope he sticks to his BJJ roots and wish him luck.

gonzaga looked to be the next HW monster after he smashed CC.
then the fight with Werdum... I was so psyched!
The bell rang and GG was quite obviously... not scared.. that's not the right word at all, but something was definitely wrong. He was not ready to engage at all.

Lots of assholes on this thread. If the guy wants to fight then he needs to do it NOW. Not every fighter will be world champion...Flat out, most simply will never be. Doesn't mean they shouldn't fight and strive...Some of the most loved fighters never even sniffed a title....LOL @ Gonzaga being 80 years old and wishing he would have made one last run, win or lose, but didn't because a bunch of asshole keyboard dorks thought he shouldn't even try and stay retired...Win or lose he can have an amazing fight career, make some fat cash, and live his dream w/ his talents while he is still able...Time retires everyone anyway. Gonzaga has a chance to live something we only dream of. I'm glad he's back.

Unfortunately, everything I have seen tells me that that "win or lose" attitude is the end of guy's run as potential world champs.

Wand, Sherk, etc.

NEVER said those sentiments while they were in the running for titles.

Werdum was likely still in his head from the first time he beat him.

Werdum is a very haunting opponent for most guys.

I like GG as a fighter and representative of the sport, but it's a mental game. He's getting KTFO.
