I dont know what is wrong w/ my wrist but for about a year, i have been having a really bad pain. I cannot bend my right wrist inward. When i bend my wrist inward, it feels like a knife is inside my wrist on the inside part of the "pinky" side of my wrist. Now, the top of my wrist is hurting. I did not do anything to hurt my wrist and i havent been training for years. It just gradually started about a year ago. The pain does not seem consistent with what i have read about carpel tunnel. If any of you have any insight of what this could be, I would greatly appreciate your feedback.

Hard to say without palpating, but here's a few things to try:

It could be the retinaculum around the wrist. It's a band that the tendons of the flexors have to pass under on their way to the palm.

Grab your wrist tightly with your left hand and twist your forearm clockwise and CCW. Does it burn or do you feel a deep ache or shearing sensation? If so, just continue to twist your wrist back and forth and work it 'til it loosens.

Dig a finger in just below the funny bone area; is it tender there? Feels like a hot needle sticking you? Sink your finger in there and maintain moderate pressure while you move your hand from a bent-over fist(like a bicep pose) to completely open(as though you were carrying a platter of food overhead). Do you feel tissue trying to struggle past your finger?

Work your finger around in there, looking for hot spots, and then continue to do the same thing along that entire line from the funny bone to the spot on your inner wrist that feels like a knife is stabbing it.

See if that helps, and if not, we can try looking in other areas.

1st suggestion: nothing

2nd suggestion: where is the funny bone?

3rd suggestion: if i were to face my right palm up towards my face and put my left index finger in the center and then bring it towards my forearm. As soon as i get to my wrist, i go towards my pinky away from my thum. That side of my wrist hurts extremely bad. If i make a fist and act like im flexing my bicep, i cant move my fist past 90 degrees. Remember, i did not do anything hurt my wrist. I never fell down, no training accidents (havent trained in years), havent punched anything, etc....

This is seriously tough to assess online. These really simple techniques become complicated as hell to write down.

The funny bone is where the ulnar nerve emerges from the cubital tunnel(it's that prominence at the medial elbow)

Your muscles should slide and glide alongside one another. Due to a number of reasons(habitual postures, repetitive movements, injury), those tissues inflame and begin to adhere, and you get the pain and reduced range of motion. So it could have been a gradual process that was flying under your radar until, one morning, you noticed that "Hey, this shit hurts."

If I'm understanding your description, it sounds like it could be one or more of the wrist flexors( carpi radialis, palmaris longus, carpi ulnaris).

If that seems right, try this:

Try pulling your fist down into the bicep pose position, take the slack out of the tissue of the forearm flexor muscles with your fingers(pulling it toward your elbow), and restrain it somewhat as you open your hand into the "platter" position and straighten your right arm.

Start up near your wrist and work your way down to the elbow.

Let's see if that works.:)

okay so im going to do a little research with some of the info that you provided. In the past 10 years, i have probably been to the doctor twice (not in reference to this) so im not someone who goes to the doctor alot. I guess the best thing to do would be to see someone due to the intricacies involved. so, who should i see? a regular doctor? hand specialist? i literally have no clue

okay, so after a quick review of wikipedia, i would say that im leaning in the direction of the carpi ulnaris. So if this has become inflamed, how do i remediate it? medication, exercises? thanks

btw, my grip strength, only on the right half of my hand has been reduced by about 30%

more information.

upon further reading, im feeling confident in an "inflamed" or "snapped" extensor carpi ulnaris. I never made the connection, but i was in several ping pong tournaments and used to play for hours at a time. Due to this being in my right wrist which is my primary ping pong playing hand along with the location isolated to the general area of the carpi ulnaris and the sypmtoms read on a few websites, i think that im narrowing it down. So, what should i do? meds? exercises? surgery?

Usually, it's an indication that you have trigger points embedded in the muscle, locking it in a shortened position. So not only do you lose range of motion, the muscle itself has lost at least some of its potential to contract...so it's weaker and more prone to fail.

Trigger points are normally at the attachments of the muscle and the middle of the muscle belly, so dig in around

• the medial epicondyle

• at the pisiform bone...you'll probably have to come in under the bottom edge of the palm to get past the fibrous band(retinaculum)across the wrist

• in the belly of the muscle...these forearm flexors have looong tendons, so the muscle belly is only an inch or two from the elbow crease. Dig a finger in there, find the tender/crunchy stuff, and move your hand around in all directions.

I'm afraid to recommend a medical person to you. PTs tend to give you a list of exercises, even for something that's already hypertonic.

MDs tend to look soft tissue problems and see bony issues...which they can then operate on.

Look for someone trained in medical massage, ART, or something similar.

Honestly, I think you can help this a lot yourself by doing a little anatomy research and digging in with your fingers.

No, take whatever you have. If you find the adhesions causing the problem, you won't need the anti-inflammatories after the next morning.
