In honor of UFC 142 HKL posted a really interesting article describing how MMA started back in 1909 with a jujutsu versus capoeira fight.
http://www.headkicklegend.com/2012/1/13/2704297/the-martial-chronicles-jiu-jitsu-brings-mixed-martial-arts-to-brazil

I've always said Brazil is to MMA as Canada is to hockey. One of the reasons I think that is because they've been fighting vale tudo/MMA for 100 years. A lot longer than anyone else.

GSP is Canadian. And French Canadian at that.

Brazil has as many UFC champs as the US with half the population.

No one is fighting pancration. That died out 1500 years ago. (Ok maybe Ken Shamrock was)

The original UFC was vale tudo. They've been fighting bale tudo for 100 years now in Brazil.

The point this article has as much point as a karate guy vs muay Thai in the early 1900's. No one had a counter to their til south Koreans Mas Oyama came and showed people the way with his godhand and his fancy karate. Phone Post

 fack.
So I fucked up on GSP.

I was half awake.

Either way, Brazil isn't completely dominant or something.
Look at any rankings. USA > Brazil.

 HW top 10 = 3 Brazillians
American = At least 5.

LHW = 2 or 3 at most are Brazillian, 5 or more American.

You can do this with every weight class.
You get the idea.

Brazil isn't "so dominant".

Out of all the champions 3 are American 3 Brazilian 1 Canadian. of number one condensers Uriah, Chad, bendo, Diaz/condit, Chael/Munoz, evans/Davis/hendo, overeem. 6 of 7 are American. This trend continues for 3rd 4th and 5th. Etc.

Also if we include flyweights they are all Americans so the champion and number one contender will be 125 lbs. Any one care to argue and say brazil is more dominant. USA is the best at mma. and those very few are of the old guard most of these guys are fresh. Phone Post

None of the elite US athletes were brought up in fighting sports. They played baseball, basketball and football. And that's where they still are, making millions.

I used to always root for Brazilian fighters (in the early 2000s), but Americans won me over when the evolution from wrestling-based GnP (which used to be heavily utilized by American fighters in the pre-TUF era) to more hybrid style happened. Most Brazilians simply didn't keep up.

1. I think America has caught up mostly do to our training (better camps) and the numbers entering MMA. But my point was that the reason Brazil was so far ahead of everybody was that they've had Vale Tudo for so long not that they'll remain ahead.
2. Since the UFC is an American company I think Americans are way over represented in its ranks.. Many of the prelim undercard slots could be be filled by better brazilians but it's not financially smart for UFC to do so. You want more Americans for American plus it's easy and cheaper to scout and fly in US guys.
3. Also if youve read nottheface's other stuff how the UFC has a direct link to the old pro wrestling of pre WWI and how brazil kept it alive from 1915 to 1993.

Number 3 should read :"Also if youve read nottheface's other stuff how the UFC has a direct link to the old pro wrestling of pre WWI and how brazil kept it alive from 1915 to 1993. I just find that whole concept fascinating."

The Underground, Mayor for Life
Carlos Gracie is the father of BJJ, but its grandfather Gastão was, among whatever other pursuits, a pro wrestlng manager. Josh Barnett has previously detailed how the roots of MMA in Brazil are in pro wrestling. Proe wrestling in Japan independently developed an MMA scene that predates UFC 1. Pro wrestling is often scoffed at by the MMA and BJJ communities, but it is at the heart of MMA, and deserves recognition as such.
