Ali - Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross
Summa Theologiae (or Summa Theologica) by Thomas Aquinas
Confessions by Saint Augustine
Foundations of Christian Faith by Karl Rahner

Karl Rahner! Thank you! Reading this paraphrase has got me psyched to hear more:

I think the Eastern Orthodox Churches have some texts which would be of benefit to those in the West, primarily the Philokalia and The Way of A Pilgrim. For Christianity in the West I would include Interior Castle by St Teresa of Avila and The Cloud of Unknowing, which is an anonymous text.

Wow... 21 days ago you posted the URL for that paraphrase. Thanks. I just caught it now; haven't been paying enough attention to the HolyGround, obviously. It looks to be like Cliff's Notes to the Rahner book. (I'll have to look at it more carefully -- I haven't read through the paraphrase, but I'm glad to know it's there). Good post!

I am really getting into Utmost for His Highest. I didn't connect with it at first but it and I are getting aligned. It is a classic devotional so I say yes it's good on this list.
