ONE Fighting Championship has entered into a 10-year media partnership ESPN Star Sports, the largest sports network in Asia. ESPN Star Sports owns the broadcast rights in 24 Asian countries to many of the world's leading sports events, including the Olympics, NBA, MLB, PGA, World Cup, Formula One, and English Premier League.

Official press release:

ONE Fighting Championship™, Asia’s largest MMA organization, announces a 10-year media partnership with ESPN STAR Sports, Asia’s biggest sports content provider. This partnership marks the largest MMA media deal in Asian history and includes showcasing the best Asian mixed martial artists against one another through a series of events across all the major cities in Asia.

Victor Cui, CEO of ONE Fighting Championship, said, "Asia has been the birthplace and home to martial arts for the last 5,000 years and ONE Fighting Championship has a vision of bringing mixed martial arts to the 3.9 billion people living in Asia. ESPN STAR Sports, Asia’s biggest provider of sports content, is a wonderful partner to help with that mission."

Adam Zecha, Executive Vice President, Head of Sales (SEA), ESPN STAR Sports, said, "ESPN STAR Sports has always been at the forefront in offering innovative and engaging programming to sports fans across the region. We have successfully showcased a diverse range of combat sports events to fans, and with this long-term partnership with ONE Fighting Championship, mixed-martial arts sports fans can now look forward to more exciting action on our networks."

ONE Fighting Championship will be hosting events in Jakarta on February 11 and in Singapore again on March 31 featuring the best Asian mixed martial artists and world champions. The full calendar of events for the rest of 2012 will be announced in the near future.

Although the UFC remains the dominant player in mixed martial arts, with Bellator on Spike domestically, and ONE FC in Asia, there is no lack of formidable competitors.

Say hello to my little friend!
Good for them. If they screw up and start to get too successful though, Zuffa will just buy them to kill them.

So Viacom got in with Bellator(i think its viacom), ESPN gets in with ONE FC

...can we stop all this UFC monopoly talk ? For an MMA scene I think there's a pretty good one, lots of local promotions as well

ESPN/Star Sports Asia is waaaaay different than your ESPN in the Western world. They only show the most boring game ever: futbol.

There are no other sports channels with enough reach in Asia, that's why ONE FC signed with them Phone Post

Hi guys-

ESPN (Star) does not "pay" the fighters. ONE fc pays them. Aside from having say in the final product delivered, ESPN star does not interfere with fighter/company relationships.

Yeah what I took from the article is that one star sports is the promoter, (not affiliated with ESPN in the fighting aspect, just distribution) and is already the biggest promoter in Asia.

ESPN Star Sports is a separate company from ESPN in America, this broadcast deal is exclusive to Asia.

'ESPN Star Sports is available in 24 Asian countries and carries the rights to prestigious sporting events such as the NBA, English Premier League, World Cup, PGA Tour, Formula One, Major League Baseball and the Olympics. ONE Fighting Championship will become the first mixed martial arts (MMA) event to be broadcast by the network since Martial Combat in 2010.'

This basically puts MMA on the same broadcast platform in Asia as the EPL, NBA, MLB etc. However it doesn't mean One FC is going to be shown on ESPN in Europe, America etc. It's possible that might happen but it would be a completely separate negotiation.

StarTV was c0-founded by a friend of mine's dad adn Li Kashing. It is a fantastically huge company. Getting in ESPN Star is no joke. Bellator just got on the Armed Forces Network.

The only one I think competing right though is HDNet Fights.

Good for the sport. Li Ka Shing is the richest man in Asia (and 11th in the world), hope that gives the promotion the backing they need.
